Idaho State Claims First Victory of the Season over Lamar

Wichita, KS--The Idaho State women's volleyball team defeated Lamar University in four sets to capture its first victory of the season in a 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 25-23 at the Best Western Shocker Classic Saturday afternoon at the Charles Koch Arena. Idaho State improves to a 1-7 record while Lamar falls to 1-5 record.

"It's nice to have a win under our belt," said head coach Chad Teichert. "It's good for the team and for the coaching staff. To get a win is for sure good."

Though Lamar out-hit the Bengals when they recorded 58 kills with 28 errors from 188 attempts for a .160 attack percentage, ISU established its victory through excellent service. The Bengals recorded 12 service aces and six errors and drew 12 return errors. The Cardinals had a difficult time with service as they recorded 15 errors.

In a back and forth match the Bengals posted 40 kills in 164 attempts to post a .122 attack percentage. Junior Emily Waldron was the only Bengal to record a double-double, the second of the season, with 10 kills and 14 digs. Waldron recorded ten digs with only three errors to post a .206 attack percentage. Senior Blakely Peppinger recorded 37 assists, the most of her career.

"She [Waldron] did a good job for us. Tonight was her best match this season," said Teichert. "She made smart choices and hit the ball well."

Freshman Emily Beardmore added to the attack as she recorded 11 kills with six errors and sophomore Sarah Carson recorded 8 kills and only one error from 22 attempts for a .318 attack percentage.

On the defense, junior Paige Palmer recorded 23 digs to help set up for the transition. Outside hitter Brenda Cooper showed her multi-faceted ability as she recorded 19 digs. The Bengals posted nine team blocks. Sophomore Britta Bartschi and Cooper recorded five block assists each, while Bartschi also recorded a solo.

The Bengals will head into the Utah Valley Invitational on a high note on Saturday, September 13 to compete against North Texas at 1 p.m. and tournament host Utah Valley at 7:00 p.m. in Orem, Utah at the Shurian Family Activity Center.
