Moscow, ID--Idaho State lost its chance to retain the Governor's Cup as it fell 2-0 to the University of Idaho in a physical match up, which consisted of 25 fouls between both teams, at Guy Wicks Field Sunday afternoon.
The Bengals banded together literally and figuratively; as ISU wore pre-wrap bracelets to symbolize their unification as a team. Idaho State won possession nearly half of the balls and played with presence and pressure on the pitch.
The Bengals came out with an increased intensity from Friday's game as the outcome of the match was crucial for a chance to tie for the Cup. Idaho State committed nine fouls in the first half as the offense challenged their opponents for possession. Idaho was whistled for a single foul in the first period. The physicality of the game increased as the Bengals drew nine fouls and were whistled with six in the second period.
Idaho State placed itself in multiple scoring opportunities as it crossed the ball in front of the goal but could not cleanly connect or possess the ball in the box to take more than three shots in the first period with one on goal. The University of Idaho took seven shots in the first period with none on goal.
The Bengals' keeper was played by freshman Bailey Williams who had four stitches and above her left (black and blue) eye when she sustained a cleat to the face against Boise State two days earlier. In the 48th minute Williams came a few yards out of the box to defend a shot from Sophomore Anna Edmonds. The Vandal's shot was blocked by Williams' body and deflected back to Edmonds. As the Bengal attempted to get back into the box she could not recover in time and Edmonds made a clean shot to the back of the net.
"We play with a high keeper and its one of the risks you take," said head coach Allison Gibson about the first goal scored against Idaho State. Williams recorded one save during the game in which she had to jump high in the air to catch the ball that would have cleared her 5'5" frame. Williams was active throughout the entire game, catching crosses and ending scoring opportunities early.
In the second period the Bengals were able to take more advantage of the hold on the offense as they unleashed eight shots with three on goal while the Vandals had six shots with three on goal. Senior Kilee Quigley improved her career record at Idaho State as she holds the sixth most shots in a career with 86. Quigley needs 60 more shots to hold the school record.
Idaho scored their second goal at 83:42 when Idaho's Jennifer Hull knocked a cross to Nicole McAllister who made a shot on the left side to score and seal the victory.
"They decided within themselves to play, within the structure and leadership. We dominated possession well over half but it's not the decision-maker," said Gibson about the Bengals determination and heart on the field whose effort did reflect in the score. "They knew they had to come out fired up and play 90 minutes."
The Governor's Cup will be decided on October 19 when Boise State travels to Moscow to play for the title at Guy Wicks Field. The Bengals will return to action against Utah Valley September 11 at Clyde field.
