Pocatello, ID--Sophie Dang began the season 1-0 as she defeated Utah State's Monica Abella in straight sets at the number two singles spot on the indoor courts at Reed Gym Thursday afternoon. The women's tennis team fell 6-1 to Utah State as the Bengals played on just three courts due to construction at Reed Gym.
Idaho State began the contest down 1-0 as they dropped both doubles contests 8-4. Junior Lisel Lewis and senior Stephanie Roldan teamed up to play Hailey Swenson and Bridgette Strickland in the number one spot, while Sophie Dang and junior Madison Snevily took on Abella and Britney Watts.
Junior Dang defeated Abella 6-3, 6-3 on the second court, her highest position in the line-up in her career. She began the match down 1-2 in the first set, but easily tied it up at 3-3 as she would attack the net. Her soft touch and deep ground strokes kept the Aggie on her toes throughout the match. The Bengal would control the match from there breaking Abella's service in the first game of the second set. Abella put in a fight, trailing 3-2 in the second before falling 6-3.
Senior Roldan took the first set after fighting back from a 0-3 start with Carla Limon at the number three spot. Roldan went on to take the first set 6-4, but fell in the second 6-4. Since the match had been decided as the Bengals were forced to drop the number five and six singles due to lack of players Roldan and Limon played a super ten-point tie-breaker. The tie break favored Limon who took the match 4-6, 6-4, 10-6.
Junior Snevily competed at the number four spot making a strong effort in the second set to fall 6-1, 6-4 against Aggie, Britney Watts.
The Bengals next competition will occur on February 10 at Weber State at noon to kick off a seven-game road streak.
Notes: Sophie Dang has won her last two singles contests against Utah State dating back to last season.
