Pocatello, ID--Idaho State captured its first home victory of the season with a straight set (25-21, 26-24, 25-23) win over in-state rival Boise State at Reed Gym Saturday night. The Bengals improved their non-conference record to 5-5 for the season defending their home court with a .244 attack percentage for the match. Idaho State improved to 8-9 while Boise State fell to 1-16 for the season.
"I don't think much about wins on the road or wins at home I just know this, it's nice to win. This was our first win at home which is the pits but it's nice to have a win at home," said Head Coach Chad Teichert as the Bengals are 1-3 at home.
The Bengals had two players post double-figures in kills with junior Haylee Thompson posting the match-high with 14 from 26 attempts and only two errors for an outstanding .462 attack percentage. Thompson has led the Bengals in kills for three matches and has tied for the lead twice. She has posted nine-double figure kill matches this season.
"Tonight she had a real good night and I wish we would have set her more," said Teichert. "Most of the time she finds a way to be effective but hasn't found ways to be this effective. She hit a .462 (attack percentage) which is fabulous."
Senior Emily Waldron, who is on a quest for 1,000 career kills to join the Triple Crown 1,000-Career Record Club, posted 11 kills against the Broncos to give her 981 for her career just 19 kills shy of 1,000. She already holds 1,000-plus career points and digs. Redshirt senior Paige Palmer was in solid form defensively posting her 12th consecutive double-figure dig performance with 22, her fifth 20-plus dig performance this season.
The Bengals had their best hitting performance in the first set when they posted 18 kills with only four errors from 46 attempts for a .304 percentage. ISU setter Karissa Legaux helped the Bengals attack percentage flourish as she recorded 40 assists.
The second and third sets were more of a fight for the Bengals than the first. Idaho State and Boise State both hit under a .200 percentage in the second, with the Bengals holding the Broncos to the lowest hitting percentage of a set at .154 for the match.
Both teams posted two blocks in the second set. Idaho State took a quick 19-14 lead, but the Broncos worked their way back to a 24-23 lead. The Bengals saved set point off a kill from Haylee Thompson and sailed to a 26-24 second set victory.
In the third set the Bengals fought back from a five-point deficit down 11-16 to tie it up late in the set at 20-20 until Idaho State overtook the Broncos 25-23 for the match. The third set was the only set in which the Broncos out-hit the Bengals with a .312 attach percentage while Idaho State posted a .250 percentage. Boise State out-blocked the Bengals with 5-to-4 team blocks. Alishia King posted a match-high four block assists.
Two Broncos posted double figures in kills with 11 by King and Sadie Maughan. Three Broncos posted double-figures in digs with Jeanene Rose posting a match-high 24 digs.
