Bengals Fall in Straight Sets to Portland State

Portland, OR--Idaho State faded into the woodwork as Portland State increased the heat with Whitney Phillips recording a match-high 20 kills in her double-double performance while the Vikings held the Bengals to singles digits in Idaho State's straight set loss (25-22, 25-20, 25-13) at the Peter W. Stott Center Friday night. Portland State improved to a 7-2 Big Sky record and 13-7 for the season while Idaho State fell to 3-6 in conference play and 9-12 for the season.

"They took it to us in three," said head coach Chad Teichert by cell phone. "In Game one we played pretty well, but after that it wasn't so special."

Idaho State produced 25 kills over the course of the contest, less than half of Portland State's tally of 53 which they accompanied with a .303 attack percentage. The Bengals hit .104 for the match and were held to a zero attack percentage in the third when they produced three kills and three errors from 27 attacks in 25-13 third set loss.

The Bengals were in the hunt in the first game playing a close contest after the Bengals tied up the score at 10 apiece, even with the Bengals hitting a .073 attack percentage. Idaho State recorded five of its eight service aces in the first set alone.

Junior Sarah Carson led the Bengals with five block assists; she also recorded two kills for the night. Senior Emily Waldron and Jaclyn Hone led the Bengals with six kills. Hone also recorded eight digs. Redshirt senior Paige Palmer led the Bengals with 11 digs while Portland State's Nicole Bateham posted a match-high 18 digs.

Phillips had the only double-double performance of the match with 20 kills and 12 digs. Marija Vojnovic posted 12 kills in the match up. The Bengals were out-blocked 8-to-5.5 in team blocks, with Christie Hamilton and Erica Jepsen each recording six block assists to lead the match. Idaho State's next match will be against Eastern Washington on Saturday, October 24 at 8 p.m. MT on the Eagle's Reese Court.

"We'll see how they respond against Eastern [Washington]," said head coach Teichert. "They've got to be ready to play the entire match."

Note: Four Bengals recorded two services aces each: Waldron, Hone, Karissa Legaux and Britta-Bartschi-Rhodehouse.
