Provo, UT --- Jimmer Fredette showed Idaho State why he was the Mountain West preseason Player of the Year pick, scoring 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting to lead Brigham Young to an 87-53 win over Idaho State that kept ISU winless against the Cougars in Provo since 1939.

Fredette's 22 were coupled with Jackson Emery's 19 points, including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. Idaho State, down 43-24 at the break had cut the lead to just 14 at 56-42 with just under 11 minutes left, and Demetrius Monroe missed a short jumper in the lane that could have cut the lead down to 12. From the there the Cougars finished the game on a 31-11 run, but it was started with back-to-back transition threes by Emery, and ISU never got close again. It ended up being an 11-0 run with Fredette hitting a three-point play and Jonathan Tavernari finishing it with a basket.

The Cougars, who have won three straight Mountain West regular season titles, had 12 different players score in the game as they shot .469, and outrebounded ISU 47-33, including grabbing the final 10. The key stat was turnovers, and the points off them as ISU's 16 turnovers were turned into 25 points, while ISU got just four points on BYU's nine turnovers.

For the Bengals, Amorrow Morgan led the way with 13 points, and Deividas Busma added 11. Demetrius Monroe continued his torrid rebounding start with 11 boards. However, ISU shot just 17-of-56, a .304 clip, and leading scorer Broderick Gilchrest was held to just three points, all on free throws as he went 0-for-6 from the line.

Idaho State now gets a few days to regroup before taking on Colorado Christian in their first home game of the season, which is on Saturday at 1:05 pm at Reed Gym

NOTES: ISU's last win in Provo was against UCLA in the Sweet 16 in 1977, ending their 11-year final four run ... ISU recorded just eight assists ... Donnie Carson hit a three-pointer from well beyond the arc to beat the halftime buzzer.
