Complete Downloadable Stat Book: Idaho State 74, Rocky Mountain 64
Pocatello, ID --- Broderick Gilchrest was the shining star with a 29-point outburst as Idaho State took down Rocky Mountain College, the defending NAIA National Champions, 74-64 in front of 1,949 fans at Reed Gym in their exhibition finale.
Rocky Mountain was pesky throughout, and ISU never trailed in the second half, but they never could quite pull away. The Bengals found themselves in another exhibition battle early, as both teams struggled from the field in the first half, but ISU lead at the break 29-27, in no small part to a solid first half from Donnie Carson, who scored 13 of his 15 in the opening half.
The Bengals then opened the second half on a 9-2 run and pretty much controlled things from there. Up 45-35 with 10 minutes left, Rocky Mountain's Theo Jackson hit a three but was T'ed up for taunting, and then head coach Bill Dreikosen was also issued a technical, and Gilchrest, who went 15-for-18 from the line in the game, hit all four freebies to put ISU back up by 11. A Gilchrest layup with 7:29 left gave ISU their biggest lead of the game at 55-41, and Mike Lacey dunk with 6:26 left again pushed it back to 14, but Rocky Mountain whittled that lead down to six with 2:55 left after a three by EJ Ross and four straight free throws.
Gilchrest however clinched it with six free throws in the final 46.8 seconds, and Amorrow Morgan added two as well, giving ISU the 10-point win. While ISU shot a respectable .448 from the field, the Bengals had just eight assist on 26 baskets, and they suffered 12 turnovers. Rocky Mountain shot just .345, and only .226 from the three-point line. Idaho State was 0-for-7 from beyond the arc.
"We have two practices left before we head to Iowa State, and we have to get a little more productive on the offensive end," said head coach Joe O'Brien. "I think we took a step forward tonight defensively, but we might have taken one backwards offensively."
ISU outrebounded RMC by 14, paced by Deividas Busma, who had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds, Gilchrest was 7-for-12, many of those driving to the basket, and he added three steals as well.
Now, ISU heads to Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa to open the season on Friday night at Iowa State. Prior to that, the team will be hosting a free "Meet The Team" with the women's basketball team on Tuesday night at Outer Limits Fun Zone, starting at 6:30 pm.
NOTES: The double-double was the second of the exhibition season for Busma ... Gilchrest ended the exhibition season with eight assists and just one turnover ... ISU blocked four shots ... the Bengals shot .609 from the field in the second half.
