Final Stats
Complete Stat Packet: Sacramento State 64, Idaho State 63
Sacramento, CA --- Broderick Gilchrest scored 25 points, nearly willing Idaho State back from a five-point deficit in the final minute, but ISU allowed a poor shooting Sacramento State team to shoot .500 in the second half, and the Hornets hit key shots and free throws down the stretch and it added up to a demoralizing 64-63 loss to the Hornets in front of just 529 fans at Hornet Gym on Saturday night.
Idaho State missed out a chance to win their conference opener for the fourth straight year, and the loss dropped the Bengals to 2-9 overall, while Sacramento State improved to 5-7 overall and 1-1 in the league.
Up 29-24 at the break, ISU got the first basket of the second half to make it 31-24, the biggest lead either team would have in the game either way, but the Hornets got it back squad in a hurry, tying the game at 31 with a 7-0 run. The lead swapped back and forth for minutes upon minutes, but ISU took their last lead with 8:16 left on a Sherrod Baldwin free throw, making it 45-44. The Hornets answered with a pair of free throws and back-to-back layups, the last by John Dickson, who scored 19 points fittingly on his 19th birthday.
Down 55-51, Baldwin got ISU to within two with 1:33 left, and then ISU forced Sacramento State into a bad shot, but the Hornets got the rebound and ran off some clock before Dickson drained a three to make it a five-point game with 41.4 left.
Amorrow Morgan, who scored 17 points, answered with a quick three of his own to cut it back to two, but the Hornets, who were an atrocious 6-for-14 from the line to that point, proceeded to make all six of their free throws in the final 30.9 seconds to seal the win. Broderick Gilchrest scored seven points in the final 12.6 seconds, but it was just one point short, as his three at the buzzer made it a one point game.
Idaho State saw Sacramento State jump out to a 6-0 lead to start the game, but ISU ran off a 13-1 run to take a six-point lead of their own. Tied at 22, ISU scored seven points in the final 1:05 of the half to open a 29-24 lead at the break.
Gilchrest and Morgan were ISU's only double-figure scorers, and Demetrius Monroe had nine rebounds to lead ISU as they outrebounded the Hornets by three. ISU suffered 13 turnovers, but just seven after the opening four minutes, when they had six. Gilchrest, who had six steals against Southern California, had four more in the game. ISU shot just .397 from the field, but they were better from the line, going .706 for the game.
For the Hornets, Dickson had 19, and Sultan Toles-Bey, Antonio Flagg and Justin Eller each had 10, with Eller adding 10 rebounds. The Hornets shot .442 from the field and .600 from the line, but a perfect 1.000 in the final minute. Idaho State now heads to Oregon to face the Ducks, who are 6-4 after a 72-60 win over Oakland on Saturday night.
NOTES: Gilchrest hit four of ISU's five threes ... Austin Kilpatrick's regular season streak of games with a three-pointer ended at 14 as he was 0-for-2 in 11 minutes ... ISU's post players were 7-for-10 (.700) from the field, while the guards went just 16-48 (.333) ... ISU had just nine assists, and no one with more than two ... ISU lost at Sacramento State for the second straight year.
