Tempe, AZ -- Idaho State gave #15 Arizona State a scare as the Bengals played a tight contest with seven tied scores and eight lead changes keeping the Sun Devils on the ropes until a late 10-4 run would tilt the scales to a 65-56 decision for the tournament host at the Wells Fargo Arena in the first round of the Arizona State Classic on Friday night in front of 2,412 fans. Arizona State improved to 5-1 while the Bengals fell to 1-7 for the season.
"They did well, they are growing and getting better," said Sobolewski of the Bengals solid effort against a top-20 opponent. "I told [the girls] we have to be aware of moral victories. The purpose is to win and not to come close. But they did a great job and they've come a long way and we have to keep moving forward and getting better."
The Bengals posted four three-point leads, its last lead coming from a jumper by freshman Morgan Wohltman with 15:22 on the clock in the second half. "She had a lot better percentage tonight, nearly 50 percent from the field. She was very patient tonight and she did it in a smart way," said Sobolewski. "We ran a lot of offense and the she went to the basket and took a good shot."
Arizona State missed 13 of its first 19 shots to start the game. It would be a back and forth contest for the rest of the first half. Idaho State held a one-point lead with 1:10 remaining in the first half off of a layup from Iacovita, but Arizona State's Danielle Orsillo three-pointer would give the Sun Devils a two-point lead at 22-20 heading into the break.
