Complete Stat Packet: Utah 68, Idaho State 56
Salt Lake City, UT --- Playing without their two centers in Deividas Busma and Rolando Little, Idaho State had no real answer for Utah's marked height advantage, and that added up to a 68-56 Utah victory in front of 8,269 fans at the Huntsman Center. The Utes also exacted a measure of revenge for ISU's 72-68 win in Holt Arena.
The Bengals played without Deividas Busma, who was out with an injured foot, and Rolando Little, who was suspended indefinitely by head coach Joe O'Brien for "failure to meet team academic expectations". His status will be reevaluated next week.
That left ISU with just two post players in 6-8 Demetrius Monroe, and 6-6 Chron Tatum, and that was it, and Utah exploited that as David Foster picked up his first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Utah blew the game open early opening on a 19-6 salvo, and ISU never really recovered. The Utes led by as many as 26 in the first half and 25 at the break on the strength of their advantage inside, outscoring ISU 22-6 in the paint in the opening half and 16-2 on second chance points.
Idaho State battled throughout the second half and made a game of it late, but the deficit was too much to overcome. The Bengals got another career-high in scoring from Demetrius Monroe with 19 points, and he had a double-double of his own with 11 rebounds. Despite the height disadvantage, the Bengals outrebounded the Utes 38-34.
Along with Monroe's big night, the Bengals got 11 from Amorrow Morgan and 10 from Broderick Gilchrest as ISU, which shot just .250 in the first half, finished the game at .407, although they went just 1-for-10 from the three-point line. Utah got 15 off the bench from Jay Watkins, and then 12 each from Foster and Marshall Henderson. The Utes shot identical to ISU at .407, but hit 6-of-18 from three. They also shot 29 free throws to ISU's nine.
The Bengals finally get off the road, at least for a few days, as they host the 4-3 Boise State Broncos on Wednesday in Holt Arena, with tip slated for 7:05 pm.
NOTES: ISU remained winless against the Utes in Salt Lake, extending their skid to 0-12 ... Kilpatrick extended his streak of games with a three to start the season to eight ... Utah shot just .524 from the line in the second half ... Utah had six blocks in the first half, but none in the second ... ISU had 17 offensive boards, and Utah had 15.
