Ogden, UT- The men's tennis team began their long road trip with a 7-0 sweep from Weber State giving the Wildcats their first victory of the season. The Bengals fall 0-2 while Weber State improved to 1-4 for the season. Sophomore Danel Barrenechea posted his second straight three set match of the season.
After dropping his first six games Barrenechea fought back to capture the second set against WSU's Simon Unger. The Bengal was not able to sustain and fell 6-2 in the third at the number two spot. Junior Javier Royo had a close match with Sascha Kiehne at the number one spot but fell 6-4, 6-4.
Sophomore Alex Buceta jumped up a spot on the Bengal line up playing at the number three spot. Buceta made a solid comeback in the second but fell 6-3, 6-4 to Wildcat Chris Williams. Junior Ross DeChant mirrored Buceta's score at the number four spot against Spencer Marchant. Freshman Dan Buckingham dropped a 2-2 decision to Travis Covington at the number five spot while Andres Mancero, a junior, fell 6-2, 6-1 to Cole Paterson in his first match as a Bengal.
Idaho State dropped all three doubles matches to start the contest down 0-1. Royo and DeChant fell 8-4 at the number one spot to Kiehne and Unger while Barrenechea and Buceta fell 8-4 to Marchant and Williams at the number two spot. Buckingham and Mancero teamed up for the first time at the number three doubles spot dropping an 8-2 decision to Paterson and Covington.
The Bengals next match will be their only night match of the season as ISU takes on Utah in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, February 11 at 5 p.m.
