Salt Lake City, UT-The Bengals were swept 7-0 by #67 nationally ranked Utah at the Eccles Tennis Center on Wednesday in the Bengals only night match of the season. Junior Ross DeChant snatched seven games off of Utah's Timmy Allin falling 6-3, 6-4 at the number four spot. DeChant was the last player to leave the courts.
Junior Javier Royo fell 6-1, 6-2 at the number one spot against Othman Ouariti. Danel Barrenechea, a sophomore, struggled in the first set against John Taylor at the number two spot as he took just two games. However, Barrenechea rallied back and nearly took the second set dropping a break at 6-4.
Sophomore Alex Buceta dropped a 1-0 decision to Stephen Jacobs while freshman Dan Buckingham fell 6-1, 6-1 at the number five spot to Corbin Bensen. Junior Andres Mancero dropped the first set 6-0 before retiring giving the win to Jason Smits.
In doubles the Bengals were defeated in all three contests. Royo and DeChant fell 8-1 to Taylor and Allin at the number one seed. Barrenechea and Buceta teamed up to take on Jacobs and Benito Jose Suriano falling 8-2 at the number two spot. Buckingham and David Kutchins teamed up for the second time this season but could not overcome Smith and #1 singles player Ouariti who took the match 8-0 at the number three spot.
Idaho State will host Portland State in the Bengals first conference match of the season on Thursday, February 12 at 1 p.m. in Reed Gym.
