Pocatello, ID-Idaho State's men's tennis team fell 7-0 to Eastern Washington on Thursday morning at Reed Gym. Junior Javier Royo's three set match at the number one singles spot was the highlight o led the Bengals at the number one singles spot taking his opponent to a three set match. Eastern Washington improved to 5-1 in the Big Sky and 12-6 for the season.
Idaho State (0-11; BSC 0-4) dropped all three doubles contests to begin the match down 0-1. Royo and Danel Barrenechea teamed up in a competitive match as Royo held service to tie the pro set at 5-5. Eagles Nico Riego De Dios and Kyle Schraeder would overcome for a 7-5 decision at the number one spot.
Sophomores Alex Buceta and Barrenechea held a 3-2 lead before Daniel Pez and Julian Sanchez would break back to start a three-game winning streak. The Bengals would hold on each of their service games but could not break the Eagles to fall 8-5 at the number two spot.
In singles Barrenechea took some time to get into a rhythm with his opponent Schraeder putting him down 6-1 in the first set. Barrenechea would play a competitive second set trailing Schraeder by a break for much of the set until the Eagle posted a 6-4 decision in the second set at the number two singles spot.
Sophomore Buceta made a comeback in each of this sets as he took charge at the net, but could not overcome Pez as he fell 6-4, 6-4 at the number three spot. Royo led the Bengals at the number one spot and played the deciding match.
Royo's powerful forehand proved too much for Riego De Dios in the first set as the Bengal posted a 6-4 decision. Royo held service to take a 3-2 lead in the second set. The players exchanged service games, each holding their own, until Riego De Dios broke the Bengal to take a 6-5 lead. The momentum would carry him over for a 7-5 second set in favor of Eastern Washington.
Each player would hold their service in the third set until Riego De Diego broke Royo and held service for a 4-2 lead. As Royo composed himself he began to melodically control the tempo of the game. He worked Riego De Diego back and forth across the baseline before coming in to hit volleys to the open court. Royo would take the game with an ace on the ad side. Errors got the better of the Bengal in the remaining games as he fell 6-3 in the third. Royo fell 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 to Riego De Dios at the number one spot.
Junior Ross DeChant had a tight first set with Sanchez taking the Eagle to 6-4, but was overcome in the second set 6-0 at the number four spot. Freshman Dan Buckingham fell 6-3, 6-2 to Chad Henninger at the number five spot. Eagle Kevin Anderson defeated Andres Mancero 6-1, 6-2 at the number six spot.
The Bengals next match will be the first round of the Boise State Spring Break Tournament against the Broncos on Friday, March 27 at the Boas Tennis Center. The dual match will begin at 10 a.m.
