Logan, UT- Junior Sophie Dang improves to 2-0 singles record against the Aggies and freshman Risa Fujiwara posts first victory as a Bengal in ISU's 5-2 loss to Utah State at the Sports Academy and Racquet Club on Wednesday afternoon. The Bengals improved their individual match performance, but fell as a team to post a 0-6 season record while Utah State earned its second victory of the year against the Bengals for a 2-7 season record.
Idaho State began the match down 0-1 as the Bengals dropped two of their doubles matches and forfeited a third. Stephanie Roldan and Dang were defeated by Bridgette Strickland and Hailey Swenson 8-1 at the number one spot. Junior Lisel Lewis and Fujiwara were overcome 8-2 by Monica Abella and Carla Limon at the number two spot.
With a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Utah State's Strickland at the number two spot, Dang remains undefeated in singles against the Aggies. Fujiwara, who did not compete in ISU's season opener against Utah State as the Bengal was waiting for NCAA eligibility clearing, is also undefeated in singles play against Utah State with her first victory as a Bengal. Fujiwara overcame Britney Watts in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3 at the number four spot.
Lewis fell to Swenson 6-0, 6-1 at the number one spot while senior Roldan fell 6-1, 6-3 to Taylor Perry at the number two spot. Senior Kelli Ogborn stepped up against Cady Andelin of Utah State but fell 6-1, 6-2 at the number five spot. The Bengals forfeited the number six singles spot.
Idaho State will return to the courts as they host Eastern Washington Saturday, March 7 in ISU's second Big Sky Conference match of the season. The dual match will begin at 9 a.m. at Reed Gym.
