Logan, UT-Utah State used its home court advantage to sweep the Bengals 7-0 at the Sports Academy and Racquet Club on Friday afternoon. Sophomore Alex Buceta took Amit Maharaj to a super ten-point tie-breaker for the third set but fell to the Aggie 6-1, 6-7, 10-5 at the number three spot. Idaho State falls to an 0-8 record while Utah State improves to 6-4 for the season.
Idaho State fought hard in its doubles contests, but Utah State pulled away as Jakob Asplund and Bryan Marchant defeated junior Javier Royo and Ross DeChant 8-4 at the number one spot, while Maharaj and Alex Thatcher overcame Danel Barrenechea and Buceta 8-4 a the number two spot. Freshman Dan Buckingham and junior David Kutchins were defeated 8-1 by Mike Banks and Jordan Barlow at the number three doubles spot.
Utah State's Asplund hit the court determined to avenge his previous loss to Royo and succeeded winning a 6-1, 6-3 decision at the number one spot. Sophomore Barrenechea and junior DeChant both improved in the second set, but fell 6-3, 6-4 to Marchant and Banks at the number two and four spots respectively.
Buceta took time to adjust to the courts falling 6-1 in the first set to Maharaj, but fought back to capture the second set in a tie-breaker for a 7-6 effort. Since the dual match was already decided Buceta and Maharaj played a super ten-point tie-breaker but fell 10-5 at the number three spot.
Freshman Buckingham was overcome by Thatcher 6-2, 6-3 at the number five spot while Andres Mancero fell to Barlow 6-1, 6-0 at the number six spot.
Idaho State's next dual match will occur in Flagstaff as the Bengals take on Northern Arizona on Sunday, March 22 at 10 a.m.
