Boise, ID --- Another day, another split in Boise. Idaho State had an early 1-0 lead, but three home runs, including a pair by Christina Capobianco pushed the Boise State Broncos to a 7-4 win in ISU's fourth game of the State of Idaho Tournament at Mountain Cove.
Megan Miller homered in the top of the third to give ISU a 1-0 lead, but Boise State answered in kind in the bottom half off Kandis Clesson as Ashley Viers-Gordillo hit a two-run shot, and then one batter later Capobianco hit one out as well to make it 3-1.
Two innings later Capobianco's three-run homer made it 6-1. BSU eventually got it to 7-1 before a late comeback attempt by ISU in the seventh. Jennifer Martensen singled to lead off the seventh, and with two down, she was still at first. However, Miller singled and Caitlin McGrath reached on an error to keep the inning alive, scoring Martensen. Jessica Baca then made it 7-4 with a single up the middle, but Merissa Jannsen couldn't keep the inning going, popping out to first to end the game.
Aubray Zell got the win for Boise State, improving to 7-2 for the program which restarted this year. She allowed six hits and just one earned run. Kandis Clesson got tagged with the loss, allowing the three home runs. She was solid otherwise, walking just three and striking out one. The top of ISU's lineup was stellar, as McGrath and Miller each had two hits, and along with Jessica Baca they went 5-for-12.
Idaho State plays The College of Idaho and Boise State tomorrow in the final day of the State of Idaho Tournament before returning to Mountain Cove next week with a straight doubleheader against Boise State.
NOTES: McGrath improved her season average to .333, and Miller pushed hers to .300 ... the nine hits allowed by Clesson were the most she has allowed this season ... ISU has now allowed 17 homers this year ... Baca's two runs batted in gave her 11, and she is the first Bengal to hit double figures in that category this year.
