Buckingham Posts Singles Victory in 6-1 Loss to Wildcats

Pocatello, ID- Freshman Dan Buckingham posted a 6-4, 3-6, 11-9 victory over Chris Williams at the No. 4 singles spot as the Bengals fell 6-1 to Weber State Tuesday afternoon. Weber State improves to 5-3 in Big Sky play and 9-10 for the season while the Bengals fell to 0-6 in conference and 0-16 for the season.

Idaho State opened doubles play down 0-1 after they dropped all three doubles contests. Juniors David Kutchins and Andres Mancero took a 3-1 lead at the No. 3 position against Spencer Marchant and Williams. The Wildcats would fight back to tie the score, but the Bengals would be up a break to lead 7-6. Idaho State could not close as the Wildcats rallied for the next three games to post a 9-7 victory at the No. 3 spot.

Juniors Javier Royo and Ross DeChant were down 0-3, but fought back to trail the Wildcats by a break. Royo and DeChant were overcome 8-5 by Sascha Kiehne and Simon Unger at the No. 1 spot.

DeChant was the first off the court as he fell to Big Sky Player of the Week Henning Hipp 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 3 singles spot. Sophomore Alex Buceta was overcome 6-3, 6-2 by Unger at the No. 2 spot.

Idaho State was led by Royo at the No. 1 singles spot. The Bengal played the deciding match for Idaho State falling 6-2, 7-5 to Kiehne. In the first set Royo let his emotions seep into play, but kept them at bay in the second set. However the Wildcat had already gained the momentum and closed out the match.

Freshman Buckingham posted the only Bengal victory of the day defeating Williams at the No. 4 spot. The victory was his first at the No. 4 position where he improved to 1-1. Buckingham improved to 2-12 for the season and ended a nine match losing streak. The freshman easily took the first set 6-4, but could not overcome the Wildcat in the second set falling 6-3.

Since the match had been decided Buckingham and Willliams played a super ten-point tiebreaker for the third set. The freshman took a 4-2 lead early for the first change over, but Williams responded for three straight points. Buckingham would not be silenced as he took an 8-5 lead with well placed volleys. Thought the tiebreaker was close, Buckingham dug deep to post his first victory since defeating Portland State in straight sets.

Junior Mancero would be the last Bengal off the court as he fell 6-4, 6-2 to Marchant at the No. 5 spot.

Idaho State will finish its season on the road as ISU travels to Bozeman to play both Montana State and Montana. ISU's dual match against Montana State will be on Friday, April 17 at 5 pm, and then the Bengals turn around and play Montana on Saturday, April 18 at 9 am to close out their season.
