Pocatello, ID-The Idaho State men's tennis team gave the Big Sky undefeated Hornets a fight in their 6-0 win over the Bengals at Reed Gym Thursday afternoon. Idaho State's Javier Royo and Ross DeChant each made comebacks in the second sets forcing the Hornets to step up their play. Sacramento State continues to be the Big Sky Conference leader as they improve to 7-0 in the league and 15-5 for the season. In an effort to save time for Weber State as they returned home the doubles matches were not played.
Idaho State (0-15; BSC 0-7) played the singles contests first with junior Royo leading the Bengals at the No. 1 spot. Royo held service and took a break in his first set against Kiryl Harbatsiuk falling 6-3, but Royo would not be silenced as he rose to the challenge in second set. The lead changed back and forth until Royo was up a break with a 5-4 lead. However, Harbatsiuk would break Royo's serve to start a three-game momentum swing to close out the second set 7-5. With the win Harbatsiuk would improve to 16-4 for the season.
Bengal DeChant split the first four games in the first set at the No. 3 spot in the first set, until Hornet Holden Ching would quickly post a 5-2 lead. DeChant would pull out another game before Ching would close the set with a 6-3 decision. Junior DeChant would fire up to post a 3-2 lead an edge out Ching by a break until Ching would hold service to send the second set into a tiebreaker. Idaho State would struggle in the tiebreak falling 7-2 to Ching for a 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) decision at the No. 3 spot.
Sophomore Alex Buceta would be the first match off the court as the Bengal fell 6-2, 6-2 to Jason Smith at the No. 2 spot, Buceta's highest singles start in the lineup this season. Freshman Dan Buckingham would play the deciding match, a contest closer than the score would appear, against Artur Klimenka. Buckingham would begin the first set with a 3-2 lead, but would be overcome and would not lead again as the Bengal fell 6-3, 6-3 at the number four spot.
Junior David Kutchins fell to Joe DeGuzman 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot, in just his second singles contest of the season. DeGuzman improved to 1-1 for the season to post his first singles victory. Junior Andres Mancero was the last Bengal off the court as he was overcome 6-2, 6-3 by Jimmy Roberts at the No. 5 spot.
Idaho State's next match will occur on Tuesday, April 14 against Big Sky rival Weber State as the Bengals host at Reed Gym at 1 p.m.
Notes: Sophomore Danel Barrenechea would not grace the Bengal lineup in the contest as he rolled his ankle in the warm-up prior to the dual match.
