Northwest Nazarene Box Score
Pocatello, ID--Idaho State had offensive control from the get-go as junior Lauren Ryan posted the game-winning goal against Northwest Nazarene 2:20 into the first half. The Bengals would go on to two more goals for a 3-0 victory over the Crusaders in an exhibition game at Davis Field Tuesday afternoon.
Forward Ryan, who was ISU's leading scorer in the 2008 season, posted the first goal in the top left corner 15 yards out with the help up freshman forward Laura Perez and senior defender Kacey Ball defeating NNU keeper Tanya Zickefoose.
"Ryan's been working so hard. For her to get on the end of one so early was a huge boost of confidence for her," said head coach Allison Gibson. "To get the service from Kacey and the hard work from Perez to create that opportunity was a great thing. We want to be offensive, we want to work hard defensively to win the ball to create offense, and that is exactly what the whole play was so I think it was a great snapshot of more to come."
ISU would post the rest of its goals in the second half. The Bengals' second goal was a full freshman effort as Alishia Cairl assisted on an Ashley Jones goal at the 54:45 mark from 30 yards out. Idaho State would start three freshmen and by the end of the second half end with seven on the field. Even with such young players on the pitch ISU continued to dominate the offense and were gunning to score. Idaho State would post nine offsides in its match, show casing the offensive drive of the players.
"I give them (the freshman) a lot of credit for stepping in there and keeping the momentum and I really credit the returns in the way they have trained the freshmen throughout preseason," said Gibson. "Overall they've gotten a good education in the last ten days overall and what it is like out there."
Senior defender Christina Beseris would post ISU's final goal of the game from a free kick lofted over NNU keeper Lauren Delameter. The Bengals peppered the goal throughout the match posting 26 shots, 13 in each half, with 12 on goal.
Idaho State's defensive effort was strong as they kept the Crusaders out of the back field for the majority of the game with NNU unleashing just four shots, with one on goal to give Idaho State it's only save made by keeper Kathryn Ford. Ford played in the keeper position for ISU in the second half while sophomore Bailey Williams opened the first half.
The Bengals will open its season on the road on Friday, August 21 against New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M. Start time is slated for 7p.m.
