Albuquerque, NM--Idaho State fell in 2-0 in its season opener against New Mexico at the UNM Soccer Complex on Friday evening. The Lobos out-shot Idaho State, but not by much, as New Mexico posted 14 shots to the Bengal's eight. New Mexico scored one goal in each period.
New Mexico started off quick posting a goal in the first 11:43 seconds of the contest as Nicole Reed sprung Jennifer Williams who beat an ISU defender to score the game-winning goal. Williams would post six shots in the contest. Idaho State kept New Mexico at bay for roughly 76 minutes allowing New Mexico just three shots on goal during the contest.
However, the Lobo Jess Quador connected on the Lobos' third on goal shot as she scored a goal off a rebound from keeper Bailey Williams. Williams played all 90 minutes in goal and had one save. Kelli Cornell who was in goal for the Lobos made two saves and posted her first shutout game of the season.
ISU had two on goal shots from defender Megan Stainbrook, a sophomore, who broke through the backline for a shot on goal and freshman forward Laura Perez who unleashed a shot. Perez posted two shots during the match, with one on goal.
New Mexico drove hard offensively earning seven corner kicks and was called offsides eight times. Idaho State had three corner kicks in the second period as ISU made a strong offensive push in the final minutes. ISU had two offsides called on them. The Bengals stood their ground against the Lobos and played aggressively earning seven fouls to New Mexico's six.
Idaho State returns to the pitch on Sunday, August 23rd to take on New Mexico State in its inaugural season at 12:30 p.m. in Las Cruces, NM at the Aggie Memorial Stadium.
