Cedar City, UT--Idaho State improves to a 2-1 season as the Bengals defeat Southern Utah 2-1 at the Thunderbird Soccer Field on Friday evening. Senior Annamarie Hofstetter took a low and hard shot on net that deflected off a defender past SUU keeper Charly Booth that was credited as an own goal. ISU officials will be appealing the own goal on Monday.
"I am really proud of the girls today, we played a very hard fighting Southern Utah team and to come from behind and win on the road is a true testament to our teams drive and commitment so far this year," said head coach Allison Gibson.
Thunderbird Riley Bassett scored a goal off an assist from Laura Goodrich at 15:58 to give Southern Utah a lead. Bassett posted a game-high four shots, all of which were on goal. All six of Southern Utah's shots were on goal.
Freshman Ashley Jones scored the game tying goal off an assist from senior Hofstetter at the 29:39 mark. The goal is Jones' second of her career and the assist is Hofstetter's 21st improving her all-time career assists record at ISU and placing her one assist away from tying with Sacramento State's Katie McCoy's 22 career assists that currently holds the Big Sky Conference record.
If Hofstetter's shot taken with ten minutes remaining in the second period is credited as a goal it would be the second goal of her career. Hofstetter unleashed three shots during the contest with two on goal.
Idaho State returns home to host Maine on Sunday, August 30 at Davis Field with kick-off at 1 p.m.
Notes: Keeper Bailey Williams was credited with five saves ... Southern Utah out-fouled Idaho State 14-8.
