Orem, UT--The Bengals (4-4) fell in straight sets to #15 Southern California (6-1) in the first round of the Wolverine Invitational on the Friday afternoon of September 11 at the Shurian Family Activity Center. USC improved its season winning streak to six and its consecutive set win streak to 18 as they have swept their last six opponents. The 23 points ISU posted in the second set was the best score an opponent has recorded in a set during USC's 18-set win streak.
Senior Emily Waldron recorded her third double-double of the season when she posted 12 kills and 10 digs. She also posted a .385 attack percentage, a service ace and an assist. The Bengals had four players hit above a .300 percentage, including junior Sarah Carson who hit .500, a match-high, with five kills from ten attempts.
Idaho State held its own defensively as the Bengals out-blocked the Trojans as a team 4.5-to-3; the Trojans have only been out blocked once this season which resulted in its only loss. The Bengals also had two players post double-figures in digs with libero Paige Palmer recording 10 along with Waldron.
USC's Geena Urango had an impressive match posting 17 kills with a .469 attack percentage. Three Trojans posted a .400 or higher hitting percentage.
Idaho State held its own in the first set going back and forth posting seven tied scores, with its last a 9-all, before USC would pull ahead to take the first set 25-19.
The Bengals took an early 4-0 lead in the second set, but Southern California quickly caught up. However, ISU would not be suppressed as the Bengals tied it up at 16 each battling their way to a 23-22 lead from a triple-block by Britta Bartschi-Rhodehouse, Haylee Thompson and Jaclyn Hone. Bartschi-Rhodehouse would post a match-high three block assists. USC would capture the next three points closing out the second set 25-23. USC captured the third set 25-19 with three tied scores to start.
Overall the Bengals posted 19 tied scores and eight lead chances with the ranked team, ISU's first ranked opponent this season.
Idaho State will play its final match of the Wolverine Invitational on Saturday, September 12 at 7 p.m. against tournament host Utah Valley at the Shurian Activity Center.
