Orem, UT--Utah Valley stepped into gear after falling to the Bengals in the first set 25-15 as UVU went on to defeat Idaho State 3-1 (15-25, 25-11, 25-11, 25-22) at the Wolverine Invitational Saturday Night in the Shurian Family Activity Center. Idaho State finished third in the tournament as they fell to 4-5 while Utah Valley improved to 5-4 for the season. Senior Emily Waldron was named to the Wolverine Invitational All-Tournament team, her second tournament honor of the season.
Two Bengals posted double-figures in kills. Waldron led the Bengals with 15 while junior Haylee Thompson posted 12 kills against Utah Valley. Waldron posted double-figures in kills against #15 USC (12) and Utah Valley (15) to earn her All-Tournament Honors. She posted above a .275 attack percentage in both matches and recorded 15 digs and one service ace in the tournament.
The Bengals opened the first set against Utah Valley with a .609 attack percentage, its best set performance for the season, with the Bengals posting 16 kills from 23 attempts with only two errors. The .609 attack percentage was also the match-high.
The Wolverines stepped up their play and overcame the Bengals 25-11 in both the second and third sets. Idaho State struggled offensively in the second set as they posted seven kills with four errors. In the third set it was the Wolverine's defensive effort that shut the Bengals down as they recorded 5.5 team blocks in the third set alone. UVU out-blocked Idaho State 8.5-to-2 for the match.
The Bengals got back on the wagon in the third set, but it was too late as Utah Valley already had the momentum swing. The Wolverines hit above a .400 attack percentage in the final three sets and above a .300 in all sets. UVU averaged a .416 attack percentage for the match.
Utah Valley was led by Kayli Broadbent who posted 17 kills, followed by Cami Manwill with 10 kills. Manwill was the only player to post a double-double as she recorded 16 digs, a match-high. Three Wolverine players posted double-figures in digs including Chelsea Fa'alogo with 11 and Allyce Jones with 10 digs. Idaho State's libero Paige Palmer led the Bengals with 10 digs.
Idaho State's next match with be its first of the Big Sky Conference season as it plays Northern Arizona on Thursday, September 17 in Flagstaff, Ariz.
