Laramie, WY--Idaho State snapped its three-game losing streak with its first program victory over Wyoming as the Bengals defeated the Cowgirls 2-1 when junior Lauren Ryan scored the game winning goal, her second of her career, with 3:31 left in the second half at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Idaho State improves to 3-4 while the Cowgirls fall to 4-2-1 for the season. Idaho State came out strong as Megan Stainbrook scored ISU's first goal just 1:54 into as she connected after one touch hitting the top bar and into the top corner for her first career goal. Senior Kacey Ball and freshman Rachel Strawn assisted on the goal. Strawn posted her fourth assist of the season to lead the Bengals.
The Bengals posted five corner kicks in the first period alone while Wyoming recorded two; however it was the Cowgirls that would score off a corner kick as Carmen Blume would head it in off an assist from Jerrica Divencenzo at the 24:35 mark.
Idaho State came out strong in the second half posting as they out-shot the Cowgirls 7-5, ISU would out-shoot Wyoming 12-9 for the match.
"I'm really proud of them for coming back and responding the way they did at half time. Responding to what we asked them to do," said head coach Allison Gibson.
Wyoming had a chance to score as they were given a penalty kick off an ISU foul 25 yards from the box. However, keeper Bailey Williams snatched in from the air. She posted five saves in the contest.
"That gave us the momentum we needed," said Gibson. "That was about midway through the second half and then we rolled from there."
Junior Ryan scored the game-winning goal with 3:31 remaining. Sophomore Alex Hansen in-bounded the ball on her flip throw. Ashley Jones flicked it backward into a Wyoming defender who pushed it out of the goal. Ryan flicked the ball back with her heel coming out of the box to score the goal.
"That's how she plays," said Gibson of Ryan's backward heel-goal. "She's always doing tricky, cheeky stuff like that."
Ryan led the Bengals with three shots, all of which were on goal. Senior Ball posted two shots with both on goal.
The Bengals will have a week off before they host Utah Valley on September 23 at Davis Field. Kick-off begins at 4 p.m.
"They are going to build on this," said Gibson of ISU's road victory over Wyoming. "We are right at the end of our preparation stage for conference and we've got to get some wins under our belt and head strong into conference with some confidence."
