Greeley, CO--Idaho State struggled with consistency as they took one set away from the Bears in a 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-14, 25-23) loss at the Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion in Greeley, Colo. on Saturday night. Idaho State had its chances, but would be overcome by the Bears defensive effort as ISU was out-blocked 9-to-3. Northern Colorado, who captured the lead in the conference race as both teams had opened Big Sky play with a victory, improved to an 8-5 overall and 2-0 Big Sky record while the Bengals fell to 5-6 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
"We did a lot of good things, but at the same time we did poorly in others like ball control," said head coach Teichert. "We need to do more good things consistently."
Junior Britta Bartschi-Rhodehouse and Haylee Thompson led the Bengals with 13 kills, a season-high for Thompson. Bartschi-Rhodehouse had an impressive .370 attack percentage and recorded five digs. Sophomore Jaclyn Hone posted 11 kills for the Bengals. Both Bartschi-Rhodehouse and Hone have posted double-figures in kills in their last two matches. Libero Paige Palmer was in top form against the Bears recording 25 digs, her second 20-plus dig match of the season.
The Bengals started off slow as they began their final road match in an 11-match stretch as the Bears led 12-4 before an ISU timeout. The Bengals then posted six straight points and continued to rally throughout the rest of the set, but was unable to overcome the UNC as the Bengals fell 25-22.
Northern Colorado's defense shut out the Bengals through-out the match as they out-blocked ISU 9-to-3. UNC was most successfully in the first set as they posted four blocks to ISU's zero where UNC's Ashley Litchtenberg posted her three block assists to lead the Bears.
Bartschi-Rhodehouse, senior Emily Waldron and junior Sarah Carson led ISU in the second set with all three players posting four kills. Neither Bartschi-Rhodehouse nor Carson had an error in the first and second sets and went on to post a .667 and .500 attack percentage respectively in the second. The Bengals were in their top form in the second set as they out-hit the Bears .310 to .268, had three service aces and matched UNC in team blocks with two.
"She made some good hits," said Teichert of Bartschi-Rhodehouse. "She found some open spots and over-powered the block. She and Sarah (Carson) had zero errors in the first two sets, which was a positive for us."
After the break the Bears collected themselves and came out strong as they posted their best attack percentage for the night with .464 and winning 92 percent of sideouts. The Bears took a quick 14-9 lead and did not relent throughout the set capturing their best set performance 25-14 as Idaho State struggled offensively posting a .167 attack percentage.
Northern Colorado's Allison Raguse took command in the fourth set to close out the victory posting six kills and averaged four per set for the match. Raguse was the only player to post a double-double as she recorded 18 kills, a match-high, and 13 digs. She also matched the total block assists match-high of three, sharing with three other Bears.
Idaho State had a solid effort in the fourth set as they posted a 21-20 lead, but Northern Colorado would prevail 25-23. The Bengals did not give up as they posted two points down 24-21, to catch up, but would fall on the sideout from a kill by Raguse to end the match.
The Bengals look forward to their next match as it will be the first time they will play on their home court in Reed Gym this season when they host Eastern Washington on Friday, September 25 at 7 p.m. Live stats through ISU's athletic site and video broadcast through B2TV will be available.
Notes: Palmer improves to a six-match streak where she posts double-figures in digs ... It is Hone's sixth match this season where she posted double-figures in kills ... ISU is 3-2 in four-set matches this season, 8-9 with head coach Teichert ... ISU is 2-2 this season when out-blocked by an opponent ... Waldron was shy of double-figures in both kills and digs as she had nine kills and eight digs, ending her streak of three-matches with double-figures in kills ...
