Portland State Box Score
Pocatello, ID--Idaho State fell in straight sets to Portland State Saturday night at Reed Gym for the team's second straight loss in their home opening weekend. The 2008 Big Sky Tournament Champions Portland State improved to 8-6 and 3-1 in the Big Sky while ISU fell to 5-8 for the season and 1-3 in conference play.
"I think we didn't play very well," said Teichert of the Bengal's performance. "We didn't play with heart, which bothers me greatly because these girls are better than what people saw tonight, far better when they are on their game."
Sophomore Jaclyn Hone posted a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs. Hone posted a .103 attack percentage with 11 kills and eight errors from 29 attacks. She has recorded double-figures in kills in three of her last four matches.
"Jaclyn had some real good hits tonight but she has to reduce her errors, she needs to get that figured out," said head coach Chad Teichert. "She had some pretty good hits and kept swinging, she hit hard and that's generally a good thing."
Bengal setter Karissa Legaux had four kills on the night from six attacks with zero errors to lead the Bengals with a .667 percentage. She also recorded five digs and two block assists. Libero Paige Palmer posted a match-high 17 digs. Palmer's performance gives her an eight-match double-figures dig streak.
Idaho State did a good job of shutting down Portland State's Whitney Phillips as she has led the Vikings in kills in every match this season except tonight against the Bengals. Phillips posted just 11 kills after coming off a 28 kill performance at Weber State the night prior. The outside hitter did record PSU's only double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs.
Though the Bengals shutdown Phillips another Viking had an outstanding night. Lana Zielke who averages 1.49 kills per set posted 12 kills, the match-high, against ISU to lead the Vikings for the first time this season. A more impressive note is her .750 attack percentage as she had zero errors from her 16 attempts. She also posted four digs and three block assists.
Portland State out-blocked the Bengals 7-to-5 and was led by PSU's Christie Hamilton who posted five, the match high. Idaho State's Sarah Carson continued to lead the Bengals in the blocking effort as she recorded three.
After ISU's brief stint at Reed Gym the Bengals will hit the road again as they head to Montana to take on the Grizzlies on Friday, October 2 in Missoula, then on Saturday, October 3 the Bengals will play Montana State in Bozeman. Both contests begin at 7 p.m.
"We need to learn from this and move on and be ready for Montana and Montana State next week because they aren't going to lie down and die for us," said Teichert. "We need to be ready to play and get after it from the first play of the match to the last play of the match."
Notes: Senior Waldron reached 1,000-career digs in the contest finishing the night with 1,001 for her career total ... Portland State extended its win streak to eight straight matches over the Bengals to improve its series lead to 24-14.
