UTEP Ends Bengals Undefeated Streak

Tempe, AZ--UTEP ended the Bengals undefeated streak while improving its own as they overcame the Bengals in straight sets (25-23, 25-22, 25-20) at the ASU Sheraton Classic on Friday afternoon. UTEP improves to 4-0 for the season while the Bengals fall to 3-1.

Sophomore Jaclyn Hone led the Bengals with 11 kills, she also posted six digs. Both senior Emily Waldron and junior Haylee Thompson posted eight kills each. Waldron hit an exceptional .300 attack percentage with just two errors while Thompson posted a hitting percentage of .278 with three errors. Waldron led the Bengals in digs with seven. Setter Karissa Legaux recorded 28 assists and five digs.

UTEP had two players post double-figures in kills with Amy Sanders recording 14 and Catherine Chavez posting 11 kills. Both the Bengals and the Miners posted six team blocks.

In the first set, ISU trailed the miners by two before UTEP pulled ahead posting a five point lead. The Bengals worked back to overcome UTEP late in the set, but would struggle to maintain a consistent lead allowing the Miners to capture the first set 25-23.

Fighting back in the second the Bengals took a strong lead posting a five-point lead at 13-8. UTEP would crawl back to tie it up at 17-all, and push through to take the set 25-22. In the third set both teams were evenly matched going back-and-forth, however UTEP would pull ahead to an 11-7 lead. ISU put in a good effort fighting back twice to tie the score before UTEP pulled ahead to capture the match with its 25-23 third set.

Idaho State will play its second match of the ASU Sheraton Classic later tonight at 6 p.m. in the Wells Fargo Arena against Charleston Southern. It will also be the Lady Bucs second match of the day as they take on tournament host Arizona State at 1 p.m.
