Boise, ID--Idaho State fell 2-1 to Idaho after a penalty kick carried the Vandals to victory in the first contest of the Governor's Cup at the Boas Soccer Complex on Friday afternoon. Freshman Ashley Jones scored her third goal of the season giving ISU a 1-0 lead before Vandal Sari Morrison posted two goals, one on a penalty kick, to give Idaho the win.
The Bengals started out in control taking an early 1-0 lead after freshmen Rachel Strawn sent a cross from the left side to Jones who kicked it in the far post at the 29:56 mark. The Bengals controlled possession in the first half, but with 4:08 remaining Idaho tied up the board.
In what started off as a great save ended up with a goal for the Vandals. Williams jumped high with an outstretching hand to block a Vandal shot that was just under the crossbar to keep the ball out of the net sending it over the bar resulting in a corner kick. The Vandals would get a total of three corner kick attempts, converting on the third with Morrison scoring the goal assisted by Chelsea Small at the 40:51 mark.
"We can't give them three corners and expect them not to put the ball in the back of the net," said head coach Allison Gibson. "That's the challenge to try and click that little piece on that is going to be the difference. Both teams are dead even at that point."
The Vandals would maintain possession in the start of the second half. Unfortunately, a hand ball would be called on Idaho State resulting in a penalty kick. Vandal Morrison took the kick burying it in the top right corner well placed out of the reach of keeper Williams.
Williams would post six saves in the game after withstanding 14 shots from the Vandals, seven in each half. Idaho State posted nine shots, seven in the first period. Vandal keeper Liz Boyden recorded three saves.
"They have their own challenge right now. They have to step up and start taking ownership of this team and that is their challenge right now, to not let it slip away. It's right there," said head coach Gibson of the Bengals play against Idaho as a motivation for the Boise State game. "They are at a critical time in our season. Dropping two like that, they have to come back."
The Bengals look to split in the Governor's Cup as they take on Boise State at the Boas Soccer Complex on Sunday, September 6 at 2:30 p.m.
Notes: Annamarie Hofstetter posted two on goal shots ... Small who assisted on the game-tying goal had six shots with three on goal ... Both Vandal Erica Hart and Bengal Megan Stainbrook were given yellow cards ... Idaho State posted six corner kicks to the Vandals four.
