Pocatello, ID - Freshman Amy Bettis posted victories in both doubles and singles at her first Division I collegiate match as the Idaho State women's tennis team opened its season with a 5-2 loss against Utah State at Reed Gym Thursday afternoon. ISU had promising results the Bengals captured its first doubles victory point since April of 2008. Utah State also opened its season against the Bengals to improve to a 1-0 start.
Idaho State captured its first doubles victory point since its effort over Weber State on April 5, 2008. ISU kicked off its doubles win with an outstanding start as senior Sophie Dang and sophomore transfer Rilee Moorhead defeated Taylor Perry and Kristina Voytsekhovich in a perfect 8-0 pro-set at the No. 2 spot.
Freshmen Bettis and Rachel Ryan defeated Monica Abella and Britney Watts 8-5 at the No. 3 position. ISU's No. 1 doubles teams Lisel Lewis and Risa Fujiwara were overcome 8-3 by Hailey Swenson and Britney Watts.
Bettis continued her winning ways by capturing a three-set victory, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), over Abella at the No. 4 position. Abella did not hold service the entire first set and Bettis only twice. The Bengal freshman took a 2-0 lead before Abella captured a game. Bettis would close out the first set on serve. The Aggie fought back hard jumping out to a 3-2 lead. Bettis would capture one game before Abella would close out the second set.
With the match undecided Abella and Bettis would fight throughout the third set. Bettis would strike first to take a 4-3 lead then Abella would break back. The contest would swing back in Bettis' favor before Abella broke the Bengal's serve sending the game into a tiebreaker for the third set, but Bettis would remain on top defeating the Aggie handily with a 7-3 outcome.
"She gutted it out in the end," said Head Coach Bobby Goeltz. "It's great that she competes and she knows she is good enough to stay with these kids."
ISU's Moorhead had a competitive match at the No. 3 position but fell 6-3, 6-3 to Voytsekhovich. Utah State's Jaclyn West defeated senior Sophie Dang 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot while senior Lewis was overcome 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot by Hailey Swenson.
Therese Karlsson competed in her first match as a Bengal and fell 6-1, 6-1 to Perry at the No. 5 spot while Fujiwara fell 6-3, 6-0 to Watts at the No. 6 spot.
"This is the largest squad we've ever had since I've been here and all of them can compete," said Head Coach Goeltz. "It's going to be a lot of fun this year for both teams (men's and women's) when you are going into matches not giving them away."
