Box Score: Sacramento State 80, Idaho State 71
Pocatello, ID - Idaho State (9-12, 4-4 BSC) struggled with turnovers, compounded by the Hornet 1-2-2 press, as Sacramento State (8-12, 4-4 BSC) upset the Bengals 80-71 for the first time in school history ending ISU's undefeated 27 game win streak on Saturday afternoon at the Hornets Nest. Senior Oana Iacovita posted a double-double, her second of the season, with a game-high 25 points and a season-high 14 rebounds. Both teams ended the contest tying for fourth place in the Big Sky Rankings with a 4-4 conference record.
"We still have some opportunities to redeem ourselves. But we've got to get better at certain things or it won't matter if we are at home or away," said Head Coach Seton Sobolewski. "We've got to get back to the basics a little and we've got to be able to catch tough passes and make better passes; make better decisions, but we can fix those little things."
Idaho State struggled with turnovers posting 32 for the game, 20 in the first alone. Sacramento State took advantage of the errors recording 31 of its points off the Bengal mistakes. The Hornets also took advantage of offensive rebounds pulling down 23 to Idaho State's 12 o-boards.
However, Idaho State matched Sacramento State's offensive run from second chance point as each team posted 18 points in spite of the disparity. Idaho State out-rebounded the Hornets 43-to-41 for ISU's fifth time out-rebounding an opponent this season.
Senior forward Iacovita hit 12-of-15 from the field and made her only attempt at the line for her game-high 25 points. ISU records its third straight game where a Bengal records the game-high in points but does not end victorious.
Iacovita's 14 rebounds is a season-high for the forward and ties the season-high for the Bengals sharing the mark with freshman Ashleigh Vella. Senior guard Andrea Videbeck recorded 15 points for ISU and junior guard Andrea Blodgett chipped in a career-high 12 points hitting 5-of-10 from the field.
Even with the Bengals shooting 64 percent (16-of-25) in the first half ISU trailed by five into the break as Sacramento State hit 11 of its 14 appearances at the line while ISU made just three trips. A tight contest to start, the Hornets went on an 8-3 run to post a 29-21 lead. Freshman Morgan Wohltman helped keep the Bengals in the contest as she recorded all three of her three-point attempts in roughly four minutes. She posted nine points for ISU hitting 3-of-8 from the arc for the contest.
Sacramento State took charge in the secondhalf with a 7-2 run to record a ten-point lead. Idaho State would reduce the Hornets to a three point lead, 54-51, off a Iacovita layup with 12:56 on the clock, but the Bengals would let the game slip away. Sacramento State held its largest lead of 13 points in the second half with 6:42 on the clock when the Hornets' Charday Hunt hit two attempts from the line.
Hunt led the Hornets with 23 points hitting 5-of-18 from the field and 13-of-16 from the striple. She would also pull down five rebounds. Emily Christensen posted a double-double notching 16 points and 10 rebounds as well as posting eight steals. Ashley Garcia chipped in 14 points and recorded eight assists.
Sacramento State would hold its significant lead at the line hitting 10-of-10 in the final two minutes, even with the Bengals chipping in seven points, five from Videbeck and a closing jump shot by Iacovita.
Idaho State has struggled on the road dropping its last three in its four-game road streak. The Bengals will play six of its last eight contests at home in Reed Gym. ISU will host Montana State and Montana in back-to-back games due to the Friday/Saturday conference schedule next week. The Bengals will host Montana State on Friday, February 5 at 7:05 p.m. in Reed Gym.
Notes: Idaho State's season-high turnover count is 34 against California ... ISU's seniors Iacovita and Videbeck combined for 20 turnovers; Videbeck posting a career-high 12 ... Blodgett started the second half for the Bengals.
