Complete Stat Packet: Northern Arizona 68, Idaho State 56
Flagstaff, AZ --- Idaho State never led and Cameron Jones of Northern Arizona scored 26 points as the Idaho State Bengals lost their second straight game, this a 68-56 loss in Flagstaff that dropped Idaho State to 1-3 in the conference.
The Bengals never trailed and were tied just once, at 2-2 after a Demetrius Monroe basket after the opening minute, but NAU bolted from there to a 14-5 lead and eventually a 37-17 advantage at the half. The Bengals couldn't do much right in the first half, going just 8-for-26 from the field, and never getting to the free throw line either, allowing NAU to shoot .483 from the field.
Idaho State head coach was not pleased with the turn of events and he benched his two leading scorers Amorrow Morgan and Broderick Gilchrest to start the second half, inserting seldom used walk-on point guard Todd Starks to open the half, and it worked, as ISU scored nine points to start the half, including a Starks three.
The Bengals played better in the second half, twice cutting a 20-point lead to 10, but they were never able to get the deficit cut closer than that, despite shooting .483 in the second half, and hitting 4-of-6 from the three-point line.
Morgan scored 16 points to lead the Bengals, and Monroe ended up with a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds, but that was it for ISU, although all 10 Bengals scored. Northern Arizona was paced by Cameron Jones' 26, and Eric Platt had 13, along with 11 from Shane Johannsen and 10 from Josh Lepley. Idaho State outrebounded NAU 36-31, their fourth straight game outrebounding their opponent.
NOTES: Idaho State had 14 assists to 13 turnovers, but they recorded just one steal ... Jones, along with his 26 points, had five assists and no turnovers ... ISU outscored NAU off of turnovers 11-8.
