POCATELLO, Idaho - Idaho State overcame a slow start to defeat Montana 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-18) at Reed Gym Friday night. The win at home marks ISU's first victory over the Griz at Reed Gym since 2004, which was also in four sets. Senior Haylee Thompson-Brock posted her first double-double of the season with a match-high 17 kills and a career-high 16 digs.
Idaho State improves to 9-6 for the season and 2-3 in league action while Montana falls to 6-9 for the season and 2-2 in Big Sky play.
Thompson-Brock, an outside hitter, hit a solid .400 attack percentage for the night with 17 kills from 35 attacks and only three errors. She also notched two block assists. Senior Britta Bartschi-Rhodehouse and junior Jaclyn Hone also recorded double-figures in kills with 15 and 13 respectively.
Idaho State hit a .295 attack percentage for the match, their best performance in league play.
"I'm so proud of our team. Everyone played so well and did the very best that they could. When we all perform together as a team we do a great job," said right side hitter Bartschi-Rhodehouse.
The Bengals struggled with their attack in the first set posting a .024 hitting percentage, but then quickly turned the momentum around in the second set improving drastically to a .448 hitting percentage. In the third set the Bengals posted their best attack percentage for a set this season with an amazing .704 percentage.
"We played with quite a bit of intensity," said Head Coach Chad Teichert. "We talked about focusing on one ball at a time. Hit to win, serve to win, but one ball at a time. We were too passive and made too many mistakes in game one. When they started to be aggressive, serving to win, hitting to win, they played better."
Senior Bartschi-Rhodehouse attributed some of ISU's success to their communication, "Our willingness to communicate on the floor really changed our mentality."
Montana had three players post double figures in kills; Amy Roberts with a team-high 13 and Jaime Thibeault and Kayla Reno who each posted 10 for the night.
"Keeping (Jaimie) Thibeault out of the match early was also an advantage for us," said Teichert as Thibeault posted 15 kills against the Bengals last time they met at Reed Gym.
Though Montana out-blocked the Bengals 11-to-7, ISU's defense kept them in the contest with senior libero Jenna Proost notching a game-high 18 digs. Montana's Thibeault posted a game-high eight blocks including one solo effort while ISU's senior middle blocker Sarah Carson notched a team-high six blocks, all assisted.
The Bengals will return to Reed Gym on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. to host Montana State who overcame Weber State in five sets Friday night.
Notes: Sophomore Breanne Van Every posted a career-high eight kills. Junior setter Karissa Legaux posted a season-high 48 assists.
