CHENEY, Wash. - Idaho State had its strongest offensive effort of the season out-shooting the Eagles 22-11, but two minor defensive miscues cost the Bengals a 2-0 loss at the Eastern Washington Sports and Recreation Center Friday night. Junior Megan Stainbrook posted a game-high six shots against the Eagles including a shot off the post.
"We played the best soccer game all year," said Head Coach Allison Gibson about the Bengal's offensive effort. "We move the ball well and progressed the ball well. They worked so hard and were so invested in the game, to not get the result was crushing."
Idaho State unleashed 12 shots in the first period alone with three near misses. Sophomore forward Rachel Strawn struck a ball off the crossbar at the 20:10 mark, Stainbrook's post shot hit at 28:38 and junior forward Taylor Powell hit the post with 39:48 on the clock. Strawn and senior Lauren Ryan both posted five shots in the match.
Eastern Washington was able to take advantage of its two opportunities with Brittany Sparks sending a through ball to Whitney Brannan as ISU's defense sent a ball back to keeper Bailey Williams allowing an Eagle forward to slip through. Brannan notched her eighth goal of the season with 22:20 on the clock.
Sparks and Brannan teamed up again with Brannan setting up the ball for Sparks who was able to beat Williams when she came out of the box to defend the goal. Sparks sent the ball to the far post for her second goal of the season.
Eastern Washington captured its first Big Sky victory of the season improving to 1-2 in league action while the Bengals fell to 0-1-2. Idaho State will take a long journey to Missoula, Mont. to play the Griz on Sunday, October 17 at 1 p.m.
