POCATELLO, Idaho - Idaho State redeemed its mistakes to reel in a 3-1 victory over Montana State with authority at Reed Gym Saturday night. The Bengals held a five point lead in the second set before they were overcome 25-22, and allowed a nine point streak and MSU match point in the third set before fighting back to take the game 28-26. ISU quickly wrapped up the contest with a 25-13 victory in the fourth set for ISU's second best single set victory of the season.
The Bengals have already captured 10 victories this season improving to 10-6 with the win over the Bobcats. Idaho State improved to 3-3 in Big Sky play. Montana State fell to 9-8 for the season and 2-3 in league action.
"I think in volleyball it is a game of momentum. Honestly, we need better ball control and need to make fewer errors, fewer unforced errors. You are going to make errors; it is the nature of the game. We need better ball control and when it is time to side out we need to pass-serve so we have options for the attack," said Head Coach Chad Teichert.
Senior Haylee Thompson-Brock was one dig away from her second double-double of her career after posting her first the night before against Montana. The outside hitter posted a game-high 17 kills and nine digs against Montana State. Thompson-Brock has posted the match-high kill in three of her last four matches. Junior Jaclyn Hone posted her eighth double-double of the season, 22 of her career, with 12 kills and 13 digs.
"They (Montana State) have a couple hitters who can whack the ball and they were hitting down the line on our right side. They were pretty crafty hitting down the line then tipping it. But also we had a lot of good hits that they dug. Some of those by Haylee they were winding up and they were still digging them up. So it is a credit to their defense and their persistence," said Teichert.
The Bobcats had four players who scooped up double-figures in digs led by Rachelle Allen with a game-high 18; she also recorded 16 kills for a double-double. MSU libero Meghan Albiston recorded 16 digs while Jennifer Lundquist chipped in 11 and Nicole Baker posted 10 for the night. Sarah Horton posted 15 kills for her team as well.
Idaho State out-blocked the Bobcats 12-to-8, its sixth time overcoming its opponent this season. Senior middle blocker Sarah Carson posted a match-high seven blocks including one block assist. Senior right side hitter Britta Bartschi-Rhodehouse posted a career-high three solo blocks against the Bobcats.
Idaho State will hit the road for its next three matches including two non-conference match ups after posting a two-game home win streak. The Bengals will play its next match on Tuesday, October 5 at in-state rival Boise State's Bronco Gym. The contest begins at 7 p.m.
