Media Book: Boise State 3 - Idaho State 1
POCATELLO, Idaho - Senior Haylee Thompson-Brock led the Bengals with her third straight game posting double-figures in kills, but the Boise State wall was too strong out-blocking the Bengals 14-to-3 to overcome ISU in four sets (26-28, 25-14, 13-25, 25-14) at Bronco Gym Tuesday night. Boise State improves to 15-4 while Idaho State fell to 10-7 for the season.
Boise State out-blocked Idaho State 14-to-3, notching seven in the fourth set alone. BSU's front line defensive effort played a role in the Bengals posting a .058 attack percentage for the match, ISU's lowest mark of the season.
"We probably need to mix our offense up more," Head Coach Chad Teichert about the Bronco frontline defense that cause the Bengals trouble. "Boise State has some tall athletic girls and they blocked well. I also think our passing broke down in game three and four which hurt us."
Boise State middle blocker Sadie Maughan notched a game-high eight block assists and a game-high two solo blocks. BSU's setter Breann Nesselhuf notched six block assists.
The first set was a close contest between the Broncos and Bengals. In the second set ISU held a 13-3 lead before closing out the set 25-14 on a service ace from Thompson-Brock. Boise State swept the last seven points of the third set. The Broncos carried the momentum into the fourth set opening with a 7-0 lead to help push them toward capturing the match.
"When they (Boise State) are passing well their middle hitters can get a lot of reps and they hit very well," said Teichert.
Boise State's Fiona Jones, an outside hitter, posted a match-high 14 kills. Outside hitter Cailin Fellows notched 11 kills and Liz Harden posted 10. ISU's Thompson-Brock posted 10 kills in the contest. Senior libero Jenna Proost tied for the game-high digs with 15 while Jaclyn Hone and Breanne Van Every each chipped in 10 digs. Both Hone and Van Every have posted double-figure digs in back-to-back matches.
Idaho State will have a two day break before traveling to Sacramento State to take on the Hornets on Friday, Oct. 8 at 8 p.m. on Colberg Court.
