POCATELLO, Idaho – Idaho State squished the Hornets in the fourth set 25-16 to earn the conference tiebreaker over Sacramento State on Saturday night at Reed Gym. All four of ISU's seniors notched double-figures in their respective fields on senior night. With the win (25-21, 25-23, 21-25, 25-16) Idaho State is tied for third in the conference standings with just three matches left in the season.
The Bengals improve to 16-11 for the season, its best performance since 2003 when ISU posted a 20-9 record. The Bengals are tied for third in the Big Sky with Montana holding a 7-6 league record. Sacramento State fell to 13-15 for the season; 6-6 in conference play.
Idaho State was led by its four seniors who were honored in the final home match of their careers at Reed Gym. Senior outside hitter Haylee Thompson-Brock tied for a match-high 17 kills. Senior middle blockers Sarah Carson and Britta Bartschi-Rhodehouse each posted 10 kills with Bartschi-Rhodehouse notching a team-high .429 attack percentage. Senior libero Jenna Proost recorded 16 digs in her defensive position.
“It must feel pretty good to have played well in your last home match,” said Head Coach Chad Teichert. “I think they have every right to be happy.”
Idaho State posted a .294 attack percentage as a team while holding the Hornets to .192 for the match. The Bengals posted a .548 attack percentage in the fourth set alone posting 18 kills with one error from 31 attempts. The Bengals strung together nine straight points to take a 13-4 lead in the first set.
“Overall the kids played well enough to put us in a position to beat Sacramento State which gives us a chance to go to conference. They (Sacramento State) beat us in five down there and we needed to beat them in four here to secure the tiebreaker. It's good but there is still two weeks of season left. We still have to play three matches, all on the road, and we still have to get the job done,” said Teichert.
Idaho State will have just one match next week when they travel to Weber State on Friday, Nov. 12 to take on the Wildcats. Tip-off begins at 7 p.m.
