Bengals Battle Hard at Creighton

POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State men's basketball team showed a lot of fight Saturday evening at Creighton as they cut a 15-point second-half deficit to four with under a minute to play but the Bluejays pulled out the 66-60 win Saturday evening in front of a crowd of 15,689 at the Qwest Center.

The Bengals are 3-6 while Creighton improved to 6-4. Idaho State was led in scoring by Broderick Gilchrest's 22 points on 9-of-21 shooting from the field. Chase Grabau had 13 points and five assists. Mike Lacey had eight rebounds.

As a team ISU shot 39 percent from the field and turned the ball over only seven times. The Bengals grabbed 30 rebounds to 36 for Creighton, who shot 47.9 percent from the field.

In the first half, Idaho State trailed 33-23 at halftime. Phyl Taylor scored the opening bucket and Grabu later gave ISU a 10-9 lead four minutes into the game. Creighton then took the lead for good and built a 22-13 lead with 12:13 to play in the first half. Later in the half, ISU got within five points at 26-21 with 5:57 left in the half.

With the score 33-23 at halftime, the Bengals got within six at 34-28 in the first minute of the second period.

Idaho State stayed within six to seven points for the next 10 minutes of the second half. Then with 10:52 to play in the game and the Bengals trailing 47-41 after a Lacey a free throw, Creighton went on a 9-0 run to lead 56-41 with 6:41 to play in the game.

Idaho State got within five at 63-58 with two minutes left in the game and then Gilchrest got the Bengals with in four at 64-60 on a layup with 19 seconds remaining. Creighton connected on its two free throws to seal the win in the final seconds.

Idaho State returns to the floor on Tuesday for an 8 p.m. contest at Utah State. ISU then plays Troy and Western Michigan on Wednesday and Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Utah State's Dee Glenn Smith Spectrum.
