Freshman Prevail for Bengals in 5-2 Loss to Bobcats

Pocatello, ID - Freshmen Nate Gross and Colton Pate captured solid singles victories at the No. 5 and 6 positions in Idaho State's 5-2 loss to Montana State at Reed Gym Monday afternoon. Senior Javier Royo and junior Danel Barrenechea also a doubles victory at the No. 1 spot.

Montana State captured its first victory improving to 1-7 for the season and 1-4 in Big Sky play while Idaho State fell to 0-5 for the season and 0-2 in league play.

"We are rebuilding a program so it's a positive sign to have our freshman perform so well. Now it's time for our upperclassmen to step up," said Head Coach Bobby Goeltz.

Gross improved to a 3-2 singles record for the season with his 6-2, 6-2 victory over Myles Perkins at the No. 5 spot. C. Pate also posted a 6-2, 6-2 decision to defeat Joey Staszcuk at the No. 6 spot improving his singles record to 2-3 for the season.

Idaho State had its chances to overcome the Bobcats that began on the doubles stage. The dual match had two doubles contests advance to tiebreakers with the Bengals snatching the top match. Gross and C. Pate teamed up for the second time at the No. 3 spot falling 9-8 (7-4) to Turzanski and Staszcuk.

Senior Royo and junior Barrenechea posted their first doubles victory of the season defeating Alberto Fuentes and Fletcher Keyes 9-8 (7-2) in a tiebreaker at the No. 1 spot.

In singles, the Bengals had tight contests at the top two spots of the line up with three set contests. Royo captured the first set but would fall 2-6, 6-1, 6-0 to Pawel Turzanski at the No. 1 spot. Barrenechea would send Fletcher Keyes to a third set super ten-point tiebreaker. The Bengal would fall 7-5 in the first set tie breaker pushing him to fight back to capture a 7-5 second set. However Keyes would prevail 10-3 in the super ten-point tiebreaker.

Sophomore Dan Buckingham fell 6-4, 6-4 to Esteban Ferrero at the No. 4 singles spot while Dakota Pate was overcome 6-4, 6-2 by Alberto Fuentes at the No. 3 position. Buckingham and D. Pate teamed up at the No. 2 doubles spot falling 8-3 to Ferrero and Perkins.

Idaho State's next match is on Saturday, February 27 at Eastern Washington at 9 a.m.
