Pocatello, ID -- Senior Sophie Dang and sophomore Rilee Moorhead swept their doubles and singles contests in Idaho State's Big Sky season opening loss to Montana 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at Reed Gym. Dang and Moorhead remain undefeated in doubles for the season improving their record to 4-0 which leads the Big Sky winning percentage for all doubles contests. Montana improved to 4-6 for the season and 2-0 in league play, while the Bengals fell to 1-3 for the season.
Idaho State dropped its double point for the first time this season winning one of the three contests. Dang and Moorhead continue to clean up their doubles contests posting a quick 8-2 victory over Amanda Bran and Lauren Gibson at the No. 2 spot.
"This is a better team than we have played so far this year. We played sloppy at three, we got tight at one," said Head Coach Bobby Goeltz of the Bengals dropping their first doubles point of the season. "They look down at the score on court three and see we are losing, they think we have to win causing pressure. It's a learning process and it's a matter of confidence. A couple of players don't have the confidence to execute on their own. They are relying on their partners and that is not the way doubles is played."
In singles, Dang was down 6-0, 3-0 in the first and second set before a light bulb illuminated and the Bengal fought her way to capture the second set 6-4. Dang posted a 5-1 lead in the third set, but would struggle closing out the set as Heather Davidson took the next four games and Dang held four match points up 5-4 in the set. With the contest tied at 5-5, Dang went into overdrive breaking Davidson's service to take the lead and holding her service to capture the match. Dang defeated Davidson 0-6, 6-4, 7-5 at the No. 2 spot.
Sophomore Moorhead also struggled falling 6-4 in her first set before she stepped into the ball and started pressuring her opponent Kayla Moyse coming back from being down a break at 4-3 to take the set 7-5. In the third set she whipped through the match defeating Moyse 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot.
"That was a hell of a match. That's the best I've ever seen Rilee play tennis after the first set. I told her you have to step up and hit the ball hard to the corner. She started doing that, stepping up and took that kid out in the third set," said Goeltz.
Freshman Amy Bettis' three game win streak was ended when she fell 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 to A. Bran at the No. 3 spot. Junior Madison Snevily competed in her first singles contest of the season falling 6-2, 6-2 to Cara Lehman at the No. 6 position.
Idaho State's next match occurs on Saturday, March 6 at 10 a.m. against Montana State at Reed Gym.
