Pocatello, ID - Idaho State swept all three doubles matches and saw four competitive three set singles matches in a tough 4-3 loss to Weber State at Reed Gym Wednesday afternoon that lasted six and a half hours. Freshman Amy Bettis and sophomore Rilee Moorhead swept both doubles and singles contests. Bettis improved to 4-0 in regular season matches. Weber State captured its first victory as the team improved to 1-4 while the Bengals fell to 0-2 for the season.

"It's been a long time since we've played a close match to be in the game to win it. Look at the match last year and compare the scores. It wasn't even close," said Head Coach Bobby Goeltz of Idaho State's improved competitive play this season. "We've got two new players at three and four that won today and have won both their doubles, the nucleus is there. It's obvious."

Idaho State won its second straight doubles point of the season and is 5-1 in doubles play. The Bengals swept all three doubles matches giving ISU a 1-0 start. ISU's freshmen pair Bettis and Rachel Ryan were the first off the court as they never trailed in their 8-3 victory over Keya Jenkins and Kassia Adamson at the No. 3 spot.

Senior Sophie Dang and sophomore Moorhead followed defeating Caroline Drugge and Brittny Moore 8-4 at the No. 2 position. The Bengals No. 1 doubles spot was down 3-0 before they made their comeback overthrowing Greyce Farias and Elsje Beneke 8-6 to clinch the sweep.

"I'm very happy, very satisfied with the way doubles is going because they are starting to get an identity of how they are going to play," said Goeltz. "We won two doubles against Utah State, we won three here; the singles will fall into place down the road."

Weber State fought back to tie the dual match at 1-1 when Farias defeated Dang 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 2 singles spot. The Bengals regained the lead with a three set victory from Moorhead over Moore. The win had significant meaning for Moorhead as the sophomore had never defeated the Wildcat during their meetings in high school play. The Bengal overcame Moore 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot.

"Rilee had never beaten that girl all through high school is what the word was but Rilee is two years removed from high school," said Goeltz. "I've seen players whose games have totally changed in two years. I think initially that gave her a bit of an edge."

Idaho State extended its lead to 3-1 when Amy Bettis defeated Beneke in three sets at the No. 3 position. Beneke took the first set 6-3, but Bettis would find her strength and roll with the momentum to overcome the Wildcat 6-3 in both the second and third sets.

"Amy is a talented fighter. She's going to figure out a way to win. Even though she made it a little more difficult on herself missing a couple easy balls by over hitting them as sort of a statement or whatever, but that's experience and she won. She's 4-0. Can't argue with that," said Head Coach Goeltz.

The Bengals would have two chances to finish the match, the first opportunity occurring on the first court as senior Lewis had just split with Jenkins capturing the second set 6-4 after falling 6-3 in the first. Though down a break Lewis fought back to take a 4-3 lead. She continued to hold her next two service games to take a 5-4 lead. Jenkins would not be silenced holding serve and breaking Lewis in the final game to capture the third set 7-5.

At the No. 5 position Fujiwara fell to Drugge 6-4, 6-4 giving Weber State a 3-3 tie in the dual match to have the contest decided at the No. 6 spot. Junior Karlsson, competing in her second Division I singles match of her career, held a 5-2 lead before Adamson fought back to take the first set 7-5. Karlsson would hold another 5-2 lead in the second before Adamson again would challenge the Bengal capturing four straight games. Karlsson would hold service to tie the set at 6-6.

Wildcat Adamson had two match points in the tie breaker up 6-5 and again at 8-7, but Karlsson would fight them both off to take the tiebreaker 12-10 to send the match to three sets. Adamson would never trail in the third set, edging out the Bengal by a break. The Wildcat had two match points, a total of four for the set, and would convert on the fourth to overcome Karlsson 7-5, 6-7 (10-12), 6-4 at the No. 6 spot.

Idaho State continues its stay at home as the Bengals host North Dakota State on Friday, February 19 at 1:30 p.m. at Reed Gym.
