Rough First Inning Dooms ISU 11-1 vs. UC Santa Barbara

March 5, 2010

Box Score

Tempe, AZ --- Idaho State committed a pair of costly first inning errors, and UC Santa Barbara made the Bengals pay, plating nine runs in the first, including a grand slam by Kelly McDonald and a three-run double by Keilani Jennings with two outs as the Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara roughed up Idaho State 11-1 in ISU's first game of the Wilson/DeMarini Classic at Farrington Stadium in Tempe.

Nora Maschue got the start for the Bengals in the circle, but she couldn't get out of the first inning. After allowing a leadoff walk and an infield single to start the bottom of the first, Jennings reached on an attempted sacrifice on an error by Taylor Marchione, her first of the year. Maschue got a strike out, but Kelly McDonald deposited a pitch for the second grand slam of the season off Maschue, making it 4-0.

Maschue got one more out before another walk ended her day, and Kandis Clesson took over and loaded the bases but looked to get out of the inning when another error, this by shortstop Jessica Baca, allowed a sixth run to score, and brought Jennings back up with the bases loaded, and she cleared them with a double to center, making it 9-0 before Clesson got the last out of the inning as only three of the nine runs were earned.

Santa Barbara tacked on two more in the second on a two-run shot by Priscilla Perez.

Idaho State got their only run in the fourth when Jessica Baca doubled, and then Brittany Olsin switched places with her, doubling her home. ISU had a chance to score in the third, but Desirae Hoffman, who unbelievable went 1-for-2 but saw her average actually drop, was thrown out at home on a Marchione double to end the inning.

The Bengals limited to UC Santa Barbara to just 10 hits overall, but six walks hurt their cause. ISU knocked out six hits on their own, including a first inning single by Megan Miller, who now has hit safely in all eight games, and is working on a 13-game streak dating back to last year.

For ISU, Maschue was credited with the loss, allowing five run, only two earned, with two hits in 0.2 innings. For Santa Barbara, Krista Cobb improved to 2-3, allowing one run and six hits in five innings.

Idaho State takes on #9 Arizona State at 5:30 pm later tonight.

NOTES: Hoffman's average dropped from .522 to .520 ... Olsin has four doubles in the last three games, and five extra base hits over that same time frame ...
