Pocatello, ID - Freshman Amy Bettis and sophomore Risa Fujiwara captured singles victories in Idaho State's 5-2 loss to Montana State at Reed Gym Saturday afternoon. Bettis improved to 4-1 in singles play with her three set victory to maintain her undefeated 4-0 record in three set contests. Fujiwara captured her first singles victory of the season improving to 1-2 in dual matches. Montana State improved to 4-6 for the season and is 2-1 in Big Sky play, while the Bengals fell to 1-4 for the season and 0-2 in league action.

Bettis posted Idaho State's first victory for the day defeating Jennifer Coll 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot. The Bengals remain undefeated 5-0 at the No. 4 position for the season. The freshman was down 2-0 to Coll in the first set before rallying back to capture the next three games for a 3-2 lead. She finished the first set 6-4, but fell in the second by the same score, never leading in that set. In the third set Bettis took a 4-1 lead before defeating Coll 6-2 for the contest.

"I told her It's too bad some of you think your scholarships are based on an hourly wage," said Head Coach Bobby Goeltz of Bettis' three set matches. "As long as you win that's what matters and its true."

Sophomore Fujiwara crushed her opponent Lucy Fairbotham defeating the Bobcat 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 6 spot. Fujiwara held a 3-0 lead before Fairbotham captured a game. Fujiwara then won the next nine games with ease to close out the set.

"I guess the best expression would be that Risa graduated. She realized that if you go out there and play without forethought or premature thoughts about losing, let the match happen and see how it goes, you have a shot of winning any match," said Goeltz.

Idaho State opened its contest falling in all three doubles, posting the first time ISU was swept in doubles for the season. Senior Sophie Dang and Rilee Moorhead ended their undefeated 4-0 record at the No. 2 spot when Ali Griffin and Andrea De la Torre overcame the Bengals 8-5 at the No. 2 spot.

"Montana State is a very good doubles team, very aggressive," said Goeltz. "They threw our kids out of rhythm. I told the kids if you're not practicing against your teammates that way and all of a sudden you face this, then there is your answer. We need to practice more poaching."

Dang frustrated her opponent in the first set causing Bobcat Ali Griffin to sit on the court after a put away volley by the Bengal senior. Dang capitalized on Griffin's frustrations quickly taking the first set 6-3 at the No. 2 position. Dang posted a 3-2 lead before Griffin fought back and captured the next three games. With the momentum Griffin defeated Dang 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 ending Dang's two-match singles win streak.

Sophomore Moorhead's three-match singles win streak was ended when Charlotta Hjalmarsson defeated Moorhead 6-4, 6-2 at the No. three spot. Senior Lisel Lewis switched up her game style by charging the net against Laura Villegas but fell 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot. Madison Snevily made a brilliant comeback against De La Torre but was defeated 6-0, 7-5 at the No. 5 spot.

Idaho State will kick-off its five-game road streak with their next contest at Eastern Washington on Friday, March 12 at 2 p.m. MT.
