Pocatello, ID -- The Idaho State men's tennis team captured the doubles point in its final home match of the season at Reed Gym Saturday in ISU's 4-3 loss to Montana on Senior Day. Junior Danel Barrenechea extended his singles win streak to four after sweeping both his doubles and singles contests. Sophomore Dan Buckingham also swept in his contests against the Griz.
Montana improved to .500 for the season with a 6-6 record and advanced to 3-2 in league play, while the Bengals fell to 1-8 for the season and 1-5 in Big Sky play.
Buckingham and freshman Nate Gross captured the first doubles match for the Bengals with an 8-4 victory over Mikolaj Borkowski and Timo Gehrke at the No. 3 spot. Brothers Dakota and Colton Pate were overcome 8-6 at the No. 2 doubles spot.
The Bengal's lone senior Javier Royo teamed with Barrenechea to clinch the doubles point for Idaho State with an 8-4 win over Raydner Ramos and David Cysneiros at the No. 1 position to give Idaho State its first doubles point since February 12th of the 2009 season when the Bengals played Portland State.
Dakota Pate was the first off the court retiring in the second set due to a nagging injury. Freshman Gross captured the first set over Michael Facey 6-1 and would hold a 5-2 lead in the second set before Facey kicked his game into high gear overcoming Gross 7-5 in the second and 6-0 in the third giving Montana a 2-1 lead in the match.
Buckingham swung the match back in the Bengals favor with his powerful ground strokes to defeat Timo Gehrke in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot. Senior Royo fell 6-3 in his first set but re-focused with dominating play to take the second set 6-4 against Carl Kuschke at the No. 1 spot. Royo was unable to sustain and Kuschke took the third set 6-2 to give Montana a 3-2 lead in the match.
Junior Barrenechea would send the dual match to a tie at 3-3 when he captured a victory in his three set contest defeating Borkowski 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot, extending his win streak to four, the longest of any Bengal this season. Barrenechea also extended his three set match record to 2-0 for the season.
The dual match came down to the No. 6 spot where C. Pate held a 2-1 lead in the first set, but Montana's Cysneiros would overcome with a 6-3, 6-0 decision in ISU's first 4-3 match of the season. The Bengals will continue its season on Tuesday, April 13 at Weber State in Ogden at 2 p.m.
