Portland, OR - The Idaho State men's tennis team fell 7-0 to Portland at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Dakota Pate took his opponent to a super ten-point tiebreaker at the No. 3 singles spot. The Pilots improve to 9-8 while the Bengals fell to 1-11 for the season.
The Bengals fell in all three doubles contests. Portland State's No. 1 doubles team, nationally ranked #66, comprised of Evan Schleining and Filip Ziykovic defeated senior Javier Royo and sophomore D. Pate in an 8-4 decision. Danel Barrenechea and Colton Pate fell 8-4 to Mike Pigou and Daniel Coelho at the No. 2 spot while Dan Buckingham and Nate Gross fell to Nike Wales and Bryan Thorp 8-2 at the No. 3 spot.
Sophomore D. Pate took the first set over Coelho, but Portland rallied back to take the second set 6-0. The Bengal advanced to a super ten-point tiebreaker where he fell 10-6 at the No. 3 spot. Freshman Gross fell 6-2, 6-4 to Pigou at the No. 4 spot.
Freshman C. Pate was overcome 6-3, 6-2 to Nick Wales at the No. 6 position. Portland's Martin overcame Buckingham 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 5 spot. Royo fell 6-0, 6-2 to Zivkovic at the No. 1 spot while junior Barrenechea was forced to retire due to injury after Thorp held a 6-2, 1-0 lead.
The Bengals will compete in their final match of the season at Utah State on Tuesday, April 20 at 3 p.m.
