Portland, OR --- Anna Bertrand struck out 16 Bengals in game one, and then Portland State scored 10 times on just four hits in game two as the Portland State Vikings swept a Saturday doubleheader from Idaho State 6-1 in game one and 10-1 in five innings in game two in the nightcap.

In the opener, PSU's freshman pitcher Anna Bertrand set a career-high with 16 strike outs, getting 16 of the last 18 outs via the strike out. The game was marred a bit by three separate rain delays totaling 23 minutes, and PSU scored three in the first around a delay that gave them an early lead.

With the rain coming down, Brandi Scoggins walked, and then Becca Diede hit a grounder to short that took a crazy hop on the wet field and hit shortstop Taylor Marchione in the face for a painful single. Clesson then struggled in the rain and went to 3-1 count on Lacey Holm before the game was halted for 10 minutes. On the first pitch back with it still raining Holm singled the center, and the ball skipped past Megan Miller, allowing for two runs to cross. Dechauna Skinner then singled to make it 3-0 before Clesson got out of the inning.

ISU got one back in the third on a two-out single by Emily Hu, and then Taylor Marchione lofted a well hit fly ball that bounced off the glove of Sadie Lopez for a two-base error, allowing Hu to score. Idaho State however couldn't solve Bertrand, and three more PSU runs in the fifth, all unearned, were more than enough for the Vikings.

Bertrand, who didn't strike out a batter in the first inning, easily bested her previous high of 12 strike outs, which she did against Utah Valley. She would go on to strike out the side in the second, third, fourth, and sixth innings. The 16 times struck out was the most ever by an ISU team as well, topping the 13 strikeouts against Southern Utah last year.

In game two, the Bengals actually outhit the Vikings 5-4, including two by Marchione, who lost her 19-game hitting streak in the first game when it ended with her on deck. In the opening inning, the Vikings got just two hits, but they parlayed them into seven first inning runs.

Brandi Scoggins singled in a run just two batters into the game, but then ISU's Nora Maschue then hit two batters, walked two more, and wild pitched in a run to make it 4-0. It looked like she was out of inning, but Marchione overthrew Erin Olander at first, allowing two more runs to cross, and then Olander dropped a ball in a rundown, allowing the seventh run.

ISU got on the board in the third when they were down 9-0 after leadoff double by Jocelyn Horton, a single by Hu, and a run scoring hit by Marchione. PSU got that run back on a wild pitch in the fourth, making it 10-1.

For the Bengals, Marchione, Miller, and Hu each had two hits on the day, and lost in the day was a solid performance by Kandis Clesson, who allowed two earned runs and struck out six in game one. The teams will play another doubleheader tomorrow, with ISU serving as the designated home team.

NOTES: ISU committed six errors on the day ... ISU is now 0-6 in the state of Oregon this year.
