Provo, UT --- Brigham Young spoiled ISU's upset bid with one swing, as Angeline Quiocho hit two home runs, including a grand slam into the wind in left field to give BYU the lead for good and propel the Cougars to a 11-5 win in game two of a doubleheader with Idaho State, sweeping the Bengals. ISU lost game one 6-2 as the Bengals played well against one of the nation's top teams.
ISU had methodically built a 4-1 lead through 3 ½ innings by scoring once in each of the first four innings. ISU got a run in the first on a Megan Miller ground out scoring Taylor Marchione, who reached to lead the inning off on an error. In the second, Hu and Marchione combined as Hu reached on a single, went to second on a passed ball and scored on a Marchione single.
Jennifer Martensen hit a solo homer in the third for ISU before BYU plated one in the third to cut it to 3-1. ISU made it four one on another field's choice, this by Brittany Olsin, scoring Jocelyn Horton. That run was made possible by Marchione, who alertly avoided an easy tag, meaning BYU couldn't turn a double play.
However, Quiocho ended ISU's upset bid with two swings. BYU got a run on a single by Kristin Delahoussaye, and then a walk loaded the bases for BYU's leading home run hitter Quiocho, who hit Nora Maschue's second offering deep over the left field wall for a grand slam and a 6-4 lead. Quiocho then put it away two innings later with another towering blast, this her 18th, making it 8-4. Amanda Vance-Kellum added a three-run shot to make it 11-4.
The Bengals tried to rally in the seventh, as ISU loaded the bases in the seventh and scored a run when Courtney Darby singled in a run. That made it 11-5 and put the tying run in the hole, but Terah Blackwell struck out to end the game.
In game one, the Cougars took a 6-2 decision after getting runs in the first three innings. Delahoussaye was a thorn in ISU's side all game with four hits, including run scoring singles in the second and third innings. BYU got out to a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run single by Delaney Williard.
Delahoussaye doubled in two runs in the sixth, and those proved valuable when ISU made a late comeback attempt. With Taylor Marchione on first after a single, Megan Miller grounded to second but the throw for the final out was wide, and she and Marchione moved into scoring position. Erin Olander then made BYU pay with a two-run double, but that was all ISU could get.
The Bengals got a great effort out of Kandis Clesson in the opener as she allowed six runs but became ISU's career leader in strikeouts with 268.
NOTES: Courtney Darby came in with two outs in the sixth to pitch, her second career pitching appearance, and she allowed two singles but no runs ... Taylor Marchione and Jennifer Martensen each had two hits on the day for the Bengals.
