Complete Stat Packet: #25 Brigham Young 10, Idaho State 6
Pocatello, ID --- Idaho State hung tough with the #25 Brigham Young Cougars, but wildness from the pitching staff negated a solid offensive effort as ISU lost 10-6 in the third game of the BYU Invitational in St. George, Utah as ISU's late rally fell short with the tying run on deck.
Idaho State's two pitchers, Nora Maschue and Kandis Clesson, struggled with their control, allowing a school record 11 walks, the third time this year ISU has tied or set that record. Maschue started the game and went the first three innings, allowing four runs in that span before giving way to Clesson. Clesson however allowed six runs in two-plus innings, although only one was earned, and Maschue was pressed into service in the seventh to keep BYU from winning the game on the eight-run rule.
She got ISU out of a bases loaded jam, and that gave ISU one last chance in the seventh, and they nearly pulled it off. After a leadoff ground out, Taylor Marchione doubled for her second consecutive at bat, and went to third on a single by Desirae Hoffman. Megan Miller was hit by a pitch to load the bases with ISU down 10-3, and Erin Olander, who started her career at BYU, singled in Marchione to make it 10-4.
Jessica Baca grounded out to make it 10-5, and then Jennifer Martensen reached on an error, allowing Miller to score to make it 10-6, and Brittany Olsin came up, with the tying run Terah Blackwell, on deck. However, Olsin lined out to left to end the game.
The Bengals scored a run in the second when Jessica Baca, who doubled, scored on an error. ISU's other two runs came in the sixth when down 7-1, Martensen drilled a two-run home run.
ISU outhit BYU 10-7, but the Cougars scored in every inning in part because of ISU's record wildness, as they walked 11 in just six innings, including at least one in every inning. BYU also got leadoff homers in the second and third innings by Caschjen Davis-Atagi and Andrea Ramirez. BYU's three runs in the sixth were all unearned.
The Bengals take on UNLV in their final game of the BYU Invitational on Saturday night before coming home to take on Great Falls in their home opener at noon on Monday, weather permitting.
NOTES: Marchione's two doubles give her seven on the season, which is tied for third all-time. Her fifth inning double was originally scored a triple, but Emily Hu was thrown out at the plate on the play, making the hit a double ... the last Bengal with two doubles in a game was Jennifer Martensen, who had two against the College of Idaho on March 8 of last year ... ISU has allowed 127 walks in 143 innings.
