Complete Stat Packet: UNLV 19, Idaho State 4
St. George, UT --- Idaho State tried a new pitcher, but the result was not overly different as three ISU pitchers proceeded to walk a school record 12 batters, and ISU allowed a school record-tying 12 runs in the fourth inning as UNLV walked all over ISU 19-4, handing the Bengals their 10th straight defeat, and making ISU 0-4 in the BYU Invitational.
The highlight for ISU was Megan Miller's fifth inning single, which gave her 122 career hits, tying her with Chris Shoemaker for the ISU career mark.
The Bengals gave first baseman Courtney Darby her first career start in the circle, and she shut down UNLV in the first on a single and a walk in the first inning, but she was touched for four in the second and three in the third.
Down 7-1 in the bottom of the third, ISU got it back to 7-2 with sacrifice fly by Jessica Baca. ISU had scored a run in the first on an Erin Olander single. The top of the fourth started with a change of pitchers as Nora Maschue took to the circle. However, the fourth inning would go on for nearly 40 minutes, and it would feature 18 batters, 12 runs, eight walks, six hits, a hit batter, and a grand slam.
Maschue walked the first four hitters she faced to make it 8-2, and then allowed a long grand slam to pinch hitter Chey Farley to make it 12-2. Maschue then walked her fifth batter of the inning, and Darby returned, but she continued the ISU struggles. Darby would only record one out, allowing two doubles, a pair of run scoring singles, and a bases loaded walk that made it 17-2. Kandis Clesson then came in, ISU's third pitcher of the inning, and although two inherited runners scored, she got ISU out of the inning and then shut down UNLV in the fifth.
Idaho State added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to get the final to 19-4 as Taylor Marchione and Megan Miller each hit run scoring singles for ISU.
The Bengals allowed 12 walks in the game, marking the fourth time ISU has set a school record for walks in a game, and the second in a row. The Bengals also allowed a school record tying 12 runs in the fourth inning, and the 18 batters by UNLV was the most ever against ISU.
Taylor Marchione went 2-for-3 for ISU, and Brittany Olsin went 2-for-2 off the bench.
The Bengals dropped to 4-21, equaling the loss total from last season, when ISU went 20-21. The Bengals now return home to face Great Falls on Monday at noon in ISU's home opener at Rainey Park.
NOTES: ISU last lost 10 in a row back in 2008 when ISU lost 11 in row under Larry Stocking ... ISU had never allowed more than 15 runs in a game in any of their first 11 seasons, and now they've allowed 19 runs twice in the last eight days.
