Complete Stat Packet: Game Two - Utah Valley 5, Idaho State 2
Pocatello, ID --- Utah Valley's Jessica Anderson homered into the black hole to tie game one in the sixth inning, and then Megan Woodworth tripled home the winning run in the eighth inning as Utah Valley against took an extra inning game from Idaho State, winning 7-6 in the opening game of a Pacific Coast Softball Conference doubleheader. UVU then got a grand slam from Amanda Perez in the first inning to win 5-2 in the nightcap.
The sweep by Utah Valley marred a festive day as ISU honored senior Megan Miller and junior Kandis Clesson prior to the game in senior day ceremonies. Clesson, who has another year of eligibility, will graduate on Saturday along with Miller, and may come back for her final year if her graduate school plans work out.
Woodworth's triple to the gap in the bottom of the eighth easily scored Jessica Anderson, who led off the inning with a walk. Utah Valley batted last in both games per conference policy. It was Anderson who sent the game into extra innings with a sixth inning leadoff home run over the Black Hole, the manually operated scoreboard in left. That ruined a wild ISU comeback that saw them come back from a 5-0 deficit after three innings.
The comeback started in the third when Courtney Darby doubled, and then Terah Blackwell followed with one of her own to make it 5-1. Blackwell went 3-for-4 on the day with a single, double, and a triple. In the fifth, Jennifer Martensen cut the lead to 5-4 with a long three run homer to left, her fourth shot of the year to lead the team. ISU then got a two-out, two-run single in the sixth from Megan Miller to take a 6-5 lead, but Anderson's homer tied it up in the bottom half, setting the stage for Woodworth's heroics.
In game two, the first five batters reached base off Clesson, with the fifth, Perez, hitting a grand slam to make it 5-0 without an out being recorded. Clesson, who pitched all of game one, left in the third and gave way to Nora Maschue, who pitched four innings on shutout ball to keep ISU in the game. The Bengals did get a run in the fourth when Erin Olander hit her first career triple and then scored on a single by Martensen, and ISU added a second run in the sixth when Brittany Olsin ripped a run-scoring single to right, making it 5-2 and bringing the tying run to the plate, but Jocelyn Horton, who turned 21 on Sunday, flew out to end the inning.
The Bengals lost their 10th straight game, a season-high, and ended their time at Rainey Park, as the team will participate in a groundbreaking for Miller Ranch Stadium on Thursday at 1:00 pm at the Stadium's site, which is located at Bartz Field.
ISU's final four game come on Friday at 2 and 4 pm, and on Saturday at 12 and 2 at Weber State. The Bengals will be without Miller and Clesson on Saturday, as they will be participating in graduation ceremonies on the ISU campus that day.
NOTES: Marchione reached base via hit, walk, or HBP for the 29th consecutive game, an ISU record ... ten of ISU's 11 triples on the season have come at home ... Kandis Clesson's home ERA was 3.52 ... ISU went just 3-9 at Rainey Park this year .. the grand slam was the seventh allowed by Idaho State this season, and the third first inning grand slam as well ... ISU made a scoring change from the first game on Saturday, crediting a double to Amanda Perez, instead of a single and an error on Emily Hu.
