Complete Stat Packet: Game One - Weber State 8, Idaho State
Ogden, UT --- A shorthanded Idaho State squad ended their 2010 softball season with a split against Weber State, winning the opener 8-2 but dropping game two by the same score. Idaho State played both games without starting centerfielder Megan Miller, and starting pitcher Kandis Clesson, who both graduated in ceremonies at Holt Arena on Saturday morning. Clesson might play next season if she can get accepted into ISU's graduate school. While ISU got through the first game fine, it was game two where starting pitcher Nora Maschue wore down.
The Bengals hit the ball well in the opening game, getting two in the first, three in the second, and one in the third to open a 7-0 lead. In the opening inning, Erin Olander and Courtney Darby each drove in runs, and in the second ISU got two on a long double by Taylor Marchione, her 18th of the year, driving in two to make it 4-0. Emily Hu then hit a sinking liner off the glove of Abby Bowcutt in center for a run scoring double, making it 5-0.
The lead might have been bigger if not for a fantastic catch in foul ground by Cassie Beene, who crashed into the fence and held on to end the first inning.
ISU moved the lead to 7-0 in the third with the help of an error when Desirae Hoffman walked with the bases loaded and then Marchione hit a sacrifice fly. Those seven runs were more than enough for Nora Maschue, who went all seven innings, allowing just six hits and striking out five, walking five as well. The only damage was a two-run double in the fourth by BreAnn Jones, but ISU got one of those back the next inning with a Terah Blackwell single, one of her three hits, that plated Courtney Darby.
Maschue started out game two well, allowing just a leadoff infield single in the first two innings, but then the wheels came off in the third. After getting the opening out of the inning, Weber State got back-to-back infield singles, and then an error loaded the bases. Heather Jackson then doubled home the first two runs of the game, and the big blow came one batter later when Aubriana Chiquette unloaded her fifth homer of the year to make it 6-0, and then WSU tacked on one more.
After the inning ISU went to emergency pitcher Courtney Darby, who entered the game with just five innings pitched during the season, but she closed down Weber State, allowing no hits in her first three innings of relief, but allowed
ISU got one of those back on a single by Jocelyn Horton with one out, but ISU couldn't capitalize on a bases loaded situation any further. ISU made it 7-2 in the fifth when Desirae Hoffman led off with her first career triple, and then Emily Hu got robbed of extra bases on a lunging catch by Genasee Aman, which went down as a sacrifice fly, scoring Hoffman.
:Notes: Idaho State ended their season 14-39, and 6-14 in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference, good for fifth in the Mountain Division.
